Morning Brew: Body parts victim identified, no driver for Ford, the mayor wants a fountain, mapping Dieppe Raid dead, remembering Jack, and Disneyland Toronto

Posted by Chris Bateman / August 22, 2012

toronto bathurst street bridge rail tracks cn towerPolice have identified the body parts found in the Credit River and Highland Creek last week as belonging to Hua Guang Liu, a 41-year-old mother of three. Liu, the owner and operator of a Scarborough spa, had been missing since August 10 and her death is being treated as homicide. Dismembered body parts belonging to the holistic practitioner were found in two locations in the GTA.

Rob Ford says he's not prepared to hire a driver because, apparently, protecting the public from his vehicular antics would be a waste of tax payers' money. Last week, the mayor was photographed reading at the wheel of his SUV. Ford later claimed the risky behavior was symptomatic of his busy schedule. You know what's cheaper than a driver? A taxi, or, heaven forbid, the TTC.

Also in Ford, the mayor says he wants an outdoor fountain for Nathan Phillips Square like one he saw in Edmonton on a recent trip. Just so we're clear, revitalizing the square is gravy but putting in a fountain is totally fine.

Sunday marked a sombre anniversary - 70 years since the disastrous second world war Dieppe Raid in which 129 soldiers from Toronto were killed on the French shoreline. Patrick Cain, the senior web coordinator at globalnews.ca, has mapped the local fallen soldiers using their home address.

Today marks one year since the death of NDP leader and former Toronto councillor Jack Layton. A family-friendly concert is planned for Nathan Phillips Square this afternoon that will feature Jason Collett, Ron Sexsmith and Raffi and talks by his widow, NDP MP Olivia Chow, and son, councillor Mike Layton. Yesterday, a bust of Layton was unveiled at Necropolis Cemetery in Riverdale where his family will bury his ashes.

Suzie McNeil, the Juno-nominated singer of the "everyone loves Marineland" jingle who wants the catchy ditty pulled from the airwaves, once roomed with Toronto councillor Michelle Berardinetti. Small world.

Finally, should Disney buy Canada's Wonderland and turn it into Disneyland North? That's the idea being floated by Mike Bastoli of The Disney Blog, an popular unofficial Disney fan site. Bastoli goes into detail about his idea and even suggests how the attraction might capture American visitors. What do you think - is it a good idea? Bonus points for a hilarious name for Disneyland Toronto in the comment section.

Because why not, here's a vintage advert for Disneyland.

Disney was looking at the land where Wonderland is located before the park was originally built, but the fact that it could not be run year round was one of the reasons they decided not to build here.

Also, considering Canada's Wonderland is the top visited seasonal amusement park in North America; I seriously doubt Cedar Fair would be willing to give up that gem.

Shiny new garbage trucks, subway trains, a ferris wheel, monorails and now fountains. Apparently we elected a small child to be the Mayor.

Our Mayor knows that the reflecting pool at Nathan Phillips Square has fountain jets, right?

I'm not sure we want to turn Nathan Phillips Square pool into a giant splashpad. I'd be interested if it's cost effective though, maybe it could be fun. I remember jumping in during Frosh and it was freezing cold though. You can't feel your feet after a couple minutes. Guess if they want it nice enough for kids to go in then they'd need to heat and treat the water.

I think you nailed it - probably the most accurate desscription of his personality I've read. It explains the temper tantrums, the ridiculous degree of stubborness, especially on issues where even his "allies" think he's wrong, the almost absolute failure of logic behind most of his ideas (and for that matter his failure to acknowledge logic and facts when they contradict what he thinks). Truly, these are the hallmarks of a little boy who hasn't yet grown up.

Why would he have to grow up? Daddy gifted him a job and his brother does his thinking for him. His Wife probably picks out his clothes to complete the trifecta.

So what's the deal with all the houses neighbouring Wonderland? Was that land Wonderland/Viacom had and sold, or never had? Because it seems like the park is kind of hemmed in now.

The last time I looked (yesterday), the Necropolis was west of the DVP. Or has Riverdale expanded to include Cabbagetown.

For all the Ford haters, try to remember why he was elected and how refreshing he is compared to the era when Miller was the tephlon Mayor. The Miller era was a scourge on the concept of transparent and accountable government where everything was keep from the public to hide the real inflated costs of his incestuous political back scratching with his union employee allies. We must always remember that at every turn for 7 years Miller told us that Toronto was the best run City in Canada, that the employees were the picture of efficiency and responsibility, that there were no inefficiencies or savings to be found in service delivery and that any money problems requiring new taxes and charges were always the fault of other levels of government who were not giving Toronto more money to feed his profligacy. Let’s not forget that for all his bungles of Ford, his Administration is the best thing to happen to Toronto in a generation and that the left wants to turn back the clock to their era of privilege, deception, waste and lies. Miller was a good con man but a terrible and mendacious Mayor who made Toronto the cry baby capital of the Country. Now Ford may be a laughing stock but at least Toronto has a fiscally responsible and accountable government and that is the primary, fundamental duty of Government that Miller ignored.

umm...Ford hasn't found efficiencies. Actually when he got into office to find all his supposed "gravy" he found diddly Squat and to make up for it cut things that people actually wanted.

I could save Toronto money too if it meant cutting library hours, reducing snow removal and cutting services across the city. That isn't "Finding efficiencies" that's called cutting services.

Miller wasn't running a Gravy Train, and he sure as hell knew how to ride a bike, go to pride, NOT break the law and deal with the media.

Accountability and transparency in not a part of Fords governing style. Ford has proven to be a habitual liar, he is deceitful, dishonest and trends towards influence peddling, none of these were traits of Miller.
There was no financial crisis, as the Ford ordered KMPG report indicated, we could afford all we had.
Miller had seven years of building the city, building better neighborhoods, community programs, making it safe, getting people off the street, cleaning it up after years of neglect. He engaged all of Toronto, not just a select few. Ford has shown little if any initiative to make Toronto a better place to live. Ford works to advance his agenda and pet projects all of which would cost more and produce a city not attractive to investors and for people to live.
Miller was far from perfect but at least he was a mayor. Ford is not a mayor except in title.
Is this why you voted for Ford, you see something for yourself? The hell with what others will loose?
4.4 Billion / August 22, 2012 at 01:14 pm

4.4 Billion. That is the current debt the city of Toronto has. That has to be paid off by us. That is why we needed to contract out certain services, that is why we can't have round the clock library service. That is why we needed to reign in city hall and look at what we must have as opposed to what we'd like to have. Miller spent 7 years increasing that debt and adding to the burden of current and future taxpayers. Ford at least wants to lessen that burden. Of course his spending billions on subways we can't afford sends a bit of a mixed message.

I know I'm swallowing troll bait but what colour is the sky in your world? Miller was not above criticism and by no means perfect, but Ford is neither transparent nor accountable by a country mile.

Ford is every bit as arrogant as people accused Miller of being, and unlike his predecessor doesn't appear to give a shit about the city he runs other than what he can view through his car windshield (when he isn't reading while driving that is)

Ford is absolutely transparent. That's why he releases his agenda to the media like each previous mayor and is available and willing to answer questions from all media outlets. Oh, wait....

@4.4 Billion: the amount of debt that the City carries is comparable to other cities, and is considered not an egregious amount by any standard. The City's strong credit rating remains unchanged since Ford took office two years ago. And the $11 million savings for collecting garbage are pretty insignificant in a budget of $4.8 billion, and furthermore don't even go into the City's operating budget as the fees are collected separately, in case you haven't been paying attention when paying your taxes. That's about the only outsourcing that's happened.

Your overly simple claim does not describe Toronto municipal politics accurately. Extreme claims require extensive evidence, and you provide none. Ford's administration is only half done, let's see what he can do in the next two years. Other commenters have done better job rebutting your claims. I just hope you're open minded enough to read and consider them.

Ford is a large child... but I disagree with iskyscraper and his ilk who seem to think the mayor's advocacy of subway trains as proof of this. Ford did not present a viable subway plan to Council earlier this year. But the Transit plan approved by Council back in March and heavily pushed by the likes of the Pembina Institute and the Toronto Environmental Alliance DOES NOT BRING RAPID TRANSIT to Scarborough. Not by a long shot. The articulated buses that the TTC has said it will be ordering will result in an almost comparable level of service of the many of the LRT lines approved, and at a fraction of the price.

Boy, people like you are surely fracking deluded, aren't you? When the frack are you and the other members of Ford Nation going to grow the frack up and realize that the man you're in love with is an overgrown child who has no idea how to run a city, and is running it into the ground?

I wonder-if and when you go on vacation to another country-what you will say and respond when people ask you what country you come from, and upon realizing it's Toronto you come from, what bullshit you'll say to them defending Ford and his antics?

I don't think it's intended to bring rapid transit to Scarborough. It just isn't built up enough to need rapid transit, and so we'd be subsidizing it hugely, like the Sheppard subway.

Scarborough is a huge opportunity though, it's got a ton of areas that could really use some intensification. If we invest in Scarborough (either through rapid transit, subways, or something) and get more offices and businesses there then it would be great for the city. That would take some serious planning though, and I don't think the city is capable of it.

Statesource... Last year, Dave Gunn (perhaps the last really respected General Manager the TTC had) did a review of TTC operations. He did not support Ford's subway plan (which really wasn't a plan). But neither did he support Transit City or the new streetcar purchase approved under Miller. He said these projects were too capital intensive for the level of service they provided and that articulated buses would meet demand in most of those areas at a fraction of the price. Regarding Alex's comment that Transit City is not meant to bring rapid transit to Scarborough, I would point out that that isn't what the vast majority of its proponenents have said (Miller was virtually the only proponent who acknowledged it didn't qualify as rapid transit). And if it isn't rapid transit, and I agree it isn't, then why are we spending this level of capital investment? Alex, I agree with you that there is huge opportunity for intensification. BUT intensification will not happen with just any investment in transit. It requires investment in RAPID TRANSIT. That can be subway (above or below ground) ... it can even be LRT lines if they were planned another way. But the bottom line is that the LRT lines in the Transit City plan were not rapid transit except in the portion of the Eglinton LRT that is underground.
