Morning Brew: Annaleise Carr makes it across Lake Ontario, G20 detention centre might become film studio, separated bike lanes under construction on Sherbourne

Posted by Derek Flack / August 20, 2012

Toronto skylineCongrats goes to Annaleise Carr (14), who's now the youngest person to swim across Lake Ontario. Her 27 hour journey ended last night at around 9 p.m., when she touched down at Marilyn Bell Park. Along with the remarkable physical achievement, Carr raised $90,000 for Camp Trillium.

The Eastern Avenue movie studio that gained notoriety when it was repurposed as the G20 detention centre might once again play host to film crews, according to Ken Ferguson, the former president of Filmport Studios. SmartCentres, the owner of the building, doesn't seem ready to confirm the news, but it sounds like a good bet.

And there they are — under construction, at least. Separated bike lanes are finally in the works on Sherbourne Street. So what of Jarvis, one wonders.

Cue the talk about the 2013 Toronto budget. City Manager Joe Pennachetti recently sent out a memo calling for a spending freeze from all departments in an effort to bridge a projected $200 million gap between city revenue and costs. Does this across-the-board strategy makes sense? Some of the mayor's critics don't think so.

Speaking of Ford's critics, here's a feature on Adam Vaughan in which he explains his rhetorical strategy to combat Rob Ford. "He takes potshots, someone's gotta give a potshot back," Vaughan told the Star. "That constitutes 'balance' in this day and age. And for some reason, I seem to be the go-to guy for potshots."

And, finally, this is what the CNE looked like in the late '50s. I think I need to call my mom now.

These Sherbourne bike lanes are going to be a disaster.

Re: Sherbourne actually happening

Who knew pigs could fly?

We'll have to see what happens. I still have full faith the Fordies will completely botch this up.

I see the lefties are up early again with their daily bitching and moaning. Bitched when bike lanes were removed and now bitching that separated bike lanes are being installed. I guess the common theme here is, I'm a leftie so I whine.

whereas you slept in and only started your daily whine after a nice brunch. At least the lefties aren't lazy.

It's hard to grasp what the left is complaining about when Del Grande is just doing what every government in the Western world is doing and compared to Daddy Dalton is doing it in a much more orderly way. Employees are actually getting a raise, taxes are going up in line with inflation, Del Grande is threatening Police Services demanding Chief Blair produce savings and we had better get ready for when land transfer tax revenues start to tank, the bill for streetcars comes due and when Dalton starts to cut shared program transfers that are bound to come as a $15 Billion deficit is going to come out of someone’s pocket and the tradition way Provinces do it is by squeezing municipalities. And unlike in the Miller years Toronto is not balancing its’ books by constantly increasing debt, increasing taxes above the rate of inflation or begging other levels of Government for bail outs. Outside of Ford's foot and mouth disease things are going quite well.

I'm right wing, you idiot, not a leftie. When will you Ford apologists understand that Ford is not a conservative, not intelligent, has backwards ideas and needs a firm boot to the rear?
