Morning Brew: The TTC of our dreams, G20 activist jailed, Lake Shore Blvd to stay open, city launches roadwork website, raised condo walkway dramatics

Posted by Chris Bateman / June 27, 2012

toronto go trains sidingThe news this morning is all about Karen Stintz and Glenn De Baeremaeker's $30-billion, 30-year OneCity transit plan that could add several new subway, LRT, bus and streetcar routes in Toronto. Check out our write up here. Stintz will discuss the plan that involves a property tax hike in depth later today.

Elsewhere, G20 activist Alex Hundert was sentenced to more 13.5 months in prison yesterday for planning disruption at the summit two years ago. Hundert was convicted of discussing damaging property and teaching other activists how to escape police custody. 11 others had their charges dropped as part of a plea deal.

Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong says Lake Shore Boulevard will stay open despite the Gardiner Expressway's tendency to shed pieces of concrete onto the busy road below. At one point yesterday the councillor suggested that it might be time to close parts of the Gardiner, but he did an about face after consulting with city staff. Earlier this week city workers chiseled off more loose construction material after pieces fell onto an occupied car. So what do we think - is it safe to drive under or not?

How do you get a steel transfer bridge halfway up two towers? Why, you crane it in of course. Daniel Arancibia captured the raising of a walkway between two towers at the CityPlace development on his blog yesterday.

Captain John's - the seafood restaurant housed onboard converted ship The Jadran at the foot of Yonge Street - is deadpool. The city rescinded the establishment's lease, cut off the water supply and ordered the kitchen closed yesterday over $500,000 in unpaid bills. We'll have more on the ill-fated boat a little later today.

And finally, the city has launched a new website that allows residents to determine where upcoming roadwork projects are scheduled to take place. You can have a look at the site here.

I can just see anti-transit councilors like Denzil Minnan-Wong and Doug Ford, as well as Rob Ford, trying to derail this plan.

That map showing construction is the most detailed I have ever seen for the City of Toronto. It shows the boundaries of every lot in the city, the buildings and outbuildings, and even the backyard pools.

The Captain John's thing is bad timing... Some big $150 a plate charity event is happening there in July, sucks for the organizers. Hopefully they have a backup plan!

Still floating on clouds over the whole OneCity thing, but re: Gardiner, I'll point out that New York once had an identical elevated highway running along the West Side of Manhattan. There were debates to take it down, but it was always deemed too important to close. Eventually, the thing became so unsafe and caused so many accidents from structural failings that it had to be closed. It was torn down and replaced by a beautified Lake Shore Blvd type road next to bike paths and parks. (http://goo.gl/maps/xFLw)

If this is the ultimate fate of the Gardiner, great. Time will do what no politician ever will.

best electronic cigarette starter kit (often called e-cigarettes and electric cigarettes)are the newest product within the market. They may be meant to appear and feel like true cigarettes, even down to emitting synthetic smoke even so they don't really contain any tobacco. People inhale nicotine vapour which appears like smoke devoid of any of your carcinogens located in tobacco smoke that happen to be dangerous to your smoker and other people approximately him.

The Electronic cigarette consists of a nicotine cartridge containing liquid nicotine. Any time a user inhales, a tiny battery driven atomizer turns a little amount of liquid nicotine into vapour. Inhaling nicotine vapour offers the consumer a nicotine strike in seconds instead than minutes with patches or gum. Once the user inhales, a little LED light at the tip in the e-cigarette glows orange to simulate a real cigarette.

The nicotine cartridges by themselves are available several strengths. Almost all of the foremost brand names, like the Gamucci electronic cigarette have entire power, 50 % strength and minimum strength. This is certainly made for individuals who wish to stop smoking. As they get used to utilizing the electronic cigarette, they're able to gradually reduce the power they use until eventually they stop.

The leading positive aspects e-cigarettes have more than nicotine patches or gum is for starters, customers have the nicotine hit much faster and second of all, due to the fact a huge cause why people who smoke fail to stop suing patches and gum is as they nevertheless overlook the act of inhaling smoke from the cylindrical item. The electronic cigarette emulates that even right down to the smoke.

The e-cigarette can also be useful from a money perception. A established of five nicotine cartridges costs approximately £8 and is also equivalent to five hundred cigarettes. Despite the fact that the initial expenditure of an electric cigarette kit of £50 may perhaps seem steep initially, buyers save income in the long run.

Just like lots of well-liked goods, there have been a large number of low cost Chinese imitations flooding the market. They are usually fifty percent the price of a branded electronic cigarette and look like the real factor also. It can be inadvisable to utilize these simply because they haven't been subject into the similar rigorous screening the official e-cigs have and will potentially be very detrimental for the user's health.
