Morning Brew: TTC streetcar accident injures three, savvy victim of alleged theft uses Craigslist, MLS championships coming to Toronto, emergency evacuation of plane at Pearson, Jordan Manners' trial snags

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / March 24, 2010

toronto yellow police carThree transit staff were injured when a TTC streetcar collided with a TTC truck near Gerrard and Broadview in the wee hours of the morning. The truck was in the middle of the road, holding traffic while two workers cleaned the tracks, when the streetcar crashed into the truck, pushing it into the workers. The driver of the streetcar and both workers on the road were injured in non-life-threatening ways, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.

A woman is in custody and a man being sought by police after the victim of an alleged theft cruised Craigslist and found what he believed to be his child's stroller. Posing as a buyer, he met up with the seller, and snapped photos of the accused. While the Internet can be an outlet for liquidating stolen goods, sometimes savvy victims can also use it to track down alleged thieves.

Soccer fans in Toronto are poised for an opportunity to witness history in the making. BMO Field is going to play host to the first ever MLS championship finals on November 21st. While it's very (very) unlikely that the TFC will even make the playoffs (let alone the finals), it should be a big boost for tourism and soccer in the city.

Noel Gallagher's victim-impact statement was read before the courts in the trial of Pickering's Daniel Sullivan, the man who rushed the stage and knocked over the Oasis musician during a performance at Vfest in 2008. The Crown wants Sullivan to spend 6 to 8 months in jail, while his lawyer wants him to serve his time in the community because, damn, he was soooo wasted when he did this that he shouldn't be held accountable for his actions. Sentencing has been pushed to April 21st.

A plane arriving from Montreal at Pearson airport yesterday experienced steering problems and the smell of smoke in the cabin, prompting the emergency evacuation of its passengers. No one was seriously hurt, and all of them have a story to tell about the one time they got to use the inflatable slide on an Airbus.

There's a snag in the trial of the two who stand accused in the murder of high school student Jordan Manners. Some witnesses have admitted to lying about their initial statements to police and their testimony in court, which may or may not sway the jury, who are now deliberating.

The cause of the TTC accident is the stupidity of the streetcar driver.

When stupid inattentive TTC drivers get into accidents on the job, do they get points deducted from their licenses?

How do you not see a truck parked right in front of you? The bridge is 100-150 m across for chrissakes. there are no distractions on either side. Just a bridge.

While I'm all for the MLS Championship game being held here, November 21 is probably going to be a bit chilly, no?

Jordan Manners trial: so a bunch of punks are caught out lying, and this is news? The real question is why the kids who have any ambition in that school have to be dragged down by the scum who want to live off the public teat and deal drugs on the side?

How do you know what the cause is? Are you some kind of all-knowing sage advisor into the outcomes of investigations which haven't even concluded yet?

Jerrold- Kind've surprised that there was no mention of Noel Gallagher's statement.

Still hating the new format of this site if for the only reason that I dont see Morning Brew on the homepage throughout the morning (what it shows up for an hour or two?).

Yes. Yes I am.
Your Law and Order nitpicking is noted.

Gonna have to agree with Jimmy here. Inattentive drivers - not exclusive to TTC - need to be called out for what for what they are. I'm sick of reading/hearing stories about "altercations" and "collisions" that you never hear the cause of. And I see numerous near misses and more than my share of injuries as a result. This is VERY clearly inattentiveness. I'd be willing to bet the truck had pylons out and hazard lights on being that they know they're in the middle of live traffic.

You know it may have been a brake problem. The streetcars are all well over 30 years old.

But no, why bother with an investigation when we've got the BlogTO comment crew on the case?

The most obvious explanation is usually the correct one. I vote for inattentive TTC driver. Or maybe we can blame Toyota for an accelerator problem?

Two things:

- unless I'm reading what I wrote wrong, I don't believe I said "so let's not have an investigation"

- what you're saying is that the TTC isn't at fault if they had a brake failure on their vehicle...?

Btw, this may be the case however I'm sure if that reasoning was an option we'd have heard the excuse before now.

Lemme guess, you texted that comment while driving?
