Goat Potato Okra RotiVena's Roti has been winning over fans for more than 15 years, and it's easy to understand why. Everything is made fresh, the portion sizes are generous and the price is good too: everything is $6-9 (tax included).

The vegetarians will be more than satisfied with the dozen veg options with fillings like squash, chick peas, spinach and eggplant, not to mention potato, mushrooms okra and more. But the carnivores will be happy too, with lots of beef, chicken, goat and seafood selections.

There are rice selections too, including a good value special offering goat and veggies with rice and a Coke for $5.99, but with a name like Vena's Roti and a big sign saying "Best Roti in Town," the choice of what to order is clear.

I ordered the goat with okra and potato roti and was immediately impressed by two things. One was the size: it was much bigger than I had expected. I definitely felt like I was getting my money's worth, and I hadn't bit in. The other, once I cut my roti open, was just how much meat and okra there was. I half expected it to be loaded with potato and light on the other ingredients.

After digging in I was also impressed with the tenderness of the goat meat. That is not an easy thing to accomplish, as goat easily becomes tough. Vena's gets it right, though, and the generous, succulent chunks of meat easily broke apart with a plastic fork and practically melted in my mouth. The flavour from the goat nicely infused the whole roti, the okra was a nice touch, and the potato helped hold it all together and soak up the flavours.

The freshness of the roti was also apparent. It was very soft and chewy - in a very good way - and it came as no surprise when the man behind the counter told me he makes them fresh once the order is placed.

Home Cooking Sign

My dining companion was very excited to sample the mixed vegetable roti, which was loaded with super fresh and delicious veggies. It wouldn't have been a surprise to discover frozen spinach, since everything is stewed together anyway, but the individual bright green spinach leaves were obviously fresh that morning. The butternut squash infused a mild sweetness that was almost addictive.

Mixed Vegetable Roti

The freshness and the flavours tasted like we could have been in the West Indies as easily as on this busy stretch of Bloor West, near Lansdowne. The hole-in-the-wall feel helped with that notion, and the fact you have to wait a few minutes (5? 10? certainly not more) for your order to be prepared.

Venas Roti Exterior

I'd really like to find something wrong or that I could criticize. Perhaps I'd like mixed veggies with meat, but it's available for an extra fee, so I can't complain. They've got a big sign that says home cooking, and while it's nothing like the cooking at my home, it tastes like comfort food just the same.

Don't you find their rotis are a bit on the runny side? (meaning, a bit too much liquid?)

They did seem a bit runny when cut open, but perhaps between the roti and potato the juices were soaked up, because at the end there wasn't any juice left on the plate.

Unless it's dramatically too runny, I tend not to mind, so it's possible I didn't notice.

some rotis are saucier than others. It depends on where they come from. Jamaican rotis are generally dryer in style.
I forgot vena's. I used to like them at their old location.

now, let's be clear. Each and every person has their favourite kind of roti and roti store.

Now, being a roti lover and passionate about food, here are some things are i look for in a roti

1. tasty roti bread
2. ingredients that work in roti or with rice or hell on their own
3. sauce - roti with dry ingredients and nothing to use up all the extra gravy

Now, having been to nearly all big roti spots in toronto (trust me, i have been some places that only sell roti's. period), I have to say, vena's rocks. Hands down, the best place in toronto with a combo of everything....now, like i said, each person has different taste...but in my experience, if u want a juicy, flavourful, bang-for-ur buck roti, venas is the spot....

Vena's has definitely won me over with their flavourful veggie combinations and they will make it hot! I'm tired of going to roti places where "hot" barely has any spiciness.

Maybe they're closed on Mondays? They even had their goat special advertised in the window.

I went by there today on Wednesday 2pm because Pams wasn't opened and found that Venas was closed. A sign said they would be open on Saturday so it seems like it isn't a reliable place to be open.

OMG! THAT'S WHERE THEY WENT! I was SO sad they left except, yeah - they never cleaned their bathroom - moving really was the only option. STELLAR Roti tho!

I went yesterday and the roti was divine. Still easily the best perfect roti in the central Toronto area, which is a lot of territory.

It's made to eat with a knife and fork, I mean come on it's as big as your head. I used to live above the original location and eat there almost every day sometimes, so damn good: hot, fresh, tasty.

The entire family are wonderful, geez those sweet little girls must be all grown up now. Masud also feeds the neighborhood once a year, an annual tradition begun when one of their little girls asked about a homeless person she'd seen one day.

I wish I lived closer I would be there all the time, cuz MAN I miss that AMAZING roti- best in the goddam city.

Best roti I've ever tasted! Period. I love all that extra sauce and that hot sauce is BOMB! My usual is a veg roti with sweet potatoes, spinach and eggplant. SO GOOD!

I recently moved into the neighbourhood and was excited to try Vena's. From what I've read, it had all the potential to be my go to place for my roti craving. After having it, my wife and I both came to the conclusion that despite it being quite delicious, it just didn't dethrown mother india.

Vena's hours has been weird lately. The owner Vena fell two years so her knee hasn't the same since. And her husband has a heart condition so it's been hard for them to run the place. I love the spicy goat with some channa. I want some now!!!
