Parlour has opened on Ossington becoming the second salon in as many years to call the strip south of Dundas home. I first discovered it a few weeks back when I glanced at the second floor space just north of Queen and noticed big new windows and white walls instead of the familiar mess of bikes that had long littered the street-scape.
The new salon, founded by former Coupe Bizarre hair stylists Tyler Moore and Franz David, boasts what they like to call a contempo-chic space-design. From their days near Queen and Euclid they have brought with them a self-described list of celebrity clients including Alexis on Fire, Hello Operator and Ron Hawkins. Prices start at $47.62 for students (or $30.48 for kids) and are $57.14 for regular aged peeps before getting into all those extras like styling, colouring etc.
Earlier this week I connected briefly with Tyler to find out more about Parlour. Here's our Q&A:
What can you tell me about the space? What was there before you moved in?
Well, the space has been completely redone. When Francis and I looked at it, it was completely gutted. From what we are told from the landlord it was a rooming house/brothel... sounded very sketchy.

What appealed to you about that location?
We had our mind pretty much set on something on Ossington Ave. We lucked out on this space and jumped on it right away. Ossington has been really up and coming and just love all the galleries and great little community.
And now Ossington has a couple of hair salons. What are you doing different than Lush & Lavish, Grateful Head, Coupe Bizarre and others in the area?
Well in a couple of those cases we are really trying to keep things practical. We love doing unique cuts, but we also want to give our clients exactly what they are looking for which in most cases is something creative, yet practical and easily wearable. On another side of it, we're really looking to make the client feel comfortable and welcome.
You also seem to be branding the salon as socially conscious. Can you explain to me the motivation behind that?
We really think that now a days, with all we know, with what all we know we can do, there is really no excuse for businesses not to take the lead and really start changing things for the better. No one's in the dark anymore about what we can do to help out our communities and environments. We're really trying to do our best given the industry we are in and hopefully lead the way.

To that end, you're offering eco-friendly hair products and donate all your hair cuttings to Matter of Trust. The latter seems like a no brainer. Why aren't more salons doing that? What else would they do with their hair cuttings?
It really seems silly when it's just that easy and helpful, to just box up the hair, and send it out. Not sure why other salons if not all salons don't partake in this considering it's so simple and easy.
I know you can donate hair to the Canadian Cancer Society, though it needs to be of certain length and virgin hair. That of course is another option.
So I guess most salons just throw it out?
Yup. Just in the trash. It can't be put in the blue or green box.
We've had a bit of a debate on blogTO before about the price difference between cuts for men vs. women. Does Parlour charge the same price for both sexes?
We charge the same price for men and women. I know many men with lush, thick hair, and know a lot of girls who have fine thin hair. In the end, it just levels the playing field to those who would either win or lose out to the different sexes pricing.

Brionie cut my hair last month and I am very pleased! also the bust Jean-luc Picard in the window = awesome.
Brionie also cuts my hair and I really like it! So easy to maintain...the layers are so fresh and really blend in well.
this is the best salon Ive been to in YEARS. i used to goto coupe and wow do they have competition now. the place is amazing and the haircuts are even better. I finally found a place I can stick to.
It's actually "Alexisonfire", not "Alexis on fire"
sounds good, but there's more competition than these two... I'm liking the brennen demelo salon on Adelaide... and wow they are stylin' hot.
I cannot believe how great my hair feels. The softest I've ever felt it. My colour is super hot! Telling all my friends. Loovvvveeee the mushrooms...
Tyler was not a stylist at Coupe Bizzarre, he was the book keeper / receptionist and as for the others, three years cutting hair part time does not make someone super qualified. Experience prevails when the trendy no longer know how and what to do. Also shipping a box of hair to the United States is NOT environmentally responsible, think of the carbon footprint that is leaving behind.
Wow I have found so many blogs and sites on Parlour. Congrats guys. Got my cut done by Charlotte and my colour done by Suzzi. I had my birthday last night(so did Charlotte) and everyone was so impressed I think all my friends will be knocking those doors down. I got served coffee and juice and got to read the National Geographic(I'm a nerd!). If you guys see this, Thanks again for saving my chopped up queen st. layers. Never again will I trust anyone else. They will set a mark in the industry or ossington for a long time. My hair is a mat for oil spills.....hehehehehe!!!!
I had Charlotte cut my hair last week and I couldn't be happier with the results. She was so pleasant and friendly and did such a great job. She listened to my needs and gave me great advice on how maintain my naturally wavy hair - which up until this point i would blow dry and flat iron almost every day. What Charlotte showed me saves me so much time in the morning, looks so much better and feels amazing! I highly recommend this salon and will definitely see Charlotte again.
I went to Parlour last week and Suzzie (colourist) was AWESOME!!! I have been to numerous salons in the West end (ie. W & Coupe Bizzare) and she is THE best! I am definitely going back and am sending good vibes to Parlour.
I'm pretty sure I saw one of the stylists from parlour getting their haircut @ coupe bizzarre. I find that a little strange. I can't figure out what to make of that.
weird, maybe it's because they're so busy... i tried to book an appoitment there and they were booked for the entire week end (fri-sun) and they have 6 cutters!!! they've gotta be good
just reading through the reviews as i am looking for a new salon....i wonder if sara, who's post is above, is still apposed to the donation of hair? seems these guys had the right idea. i am gonna try them out.
Called yesterday morning and got a same-day appointment for colour with Markis. I am really pleased with the experience. Markis was very patient, thorough, and took the time at the beginning of the session to collaborate with me on some colours/placement that we both liked. My hair turned out gorgeous. I've never felt so cared for at a salon before, and I'll definitely be back :)
I had such high expectations for this place and i cannot point to a single thing that went right when it came to my place. i went in for a cut, basic one colour (mainly to cover my grey) and a blowdry. well, first i got my cut which didn't make sense as it resulted in having to wash my hair twice, also the person who cut my hair, prceeded to blow dry my curley hair straight after the cut even though it was about to get couloured and washed again. and when i brough this to his attention he said he "couldn't texterize it" unless it was straight. althought that might make sense for him, it was a waste of time, as it meant i sat there for an extra 30 minutes for him to blow dry my hair. then off to coulour, oh, there goes the just blow dried hair, and then off to wash followed by the blow dry that is going to give that perfect salon hair that is going to make the $200 all worth it. NOT ... the girl attempting to blow dry my hair straight with a bit of volume (my request) had no clue how to do it, leaving me with frizzy crap hair ... i had to stop there as i didn't want to sit through a second blwo dry of the day (i had already been there for 3 1/2 hours) and end up with bad hair. so off i went, hair half wet, half dry put in a bun. And now that i have blow dried my own hair at home and can see the cut, it's also crap. remember Rachel's hair from Friends TV show ...ya, the one from 12 years ago ... that's how mine looks like. i'll be sticking to good restaurants on Ossington...no Parlour pour moi EVER again!
