july306_swisschard.jpgThere are only two shops I rely on in Kensington Market for my weekly fix of fruit and vegetables. One is Oxford Fruit at the corner of Nassau and Augusta; and the other is Kensington Fruit Market. The latter consistently has the best leafy greens of anywhere in the Market, if not south of Bloor. I venture there weekly to pick up fresh kale, collard greens, spinach or swiss chard (above). They're also a good bet for Portobello or regular mushrooms as well as fresh herbs like mint and basil.

They sometimes have decent apples, zucchini or root vegetables; but more often than not it's best to give the rest of the produce a pass (especially the avocados) and head to Oxford.

Here's a photo of the mushrooms:

The collard greens:

The outside of the store. The stuff outside is often not the freshest. I usually just head right inside and make a beeline for the leafy greens section.
