Better Bulk

Posted by Staff / Posted on October 8, 2009

Better BulkBetter Bulk on Danforth East is a newish entrant to the Toronto bulk food scene. They have a clean, nice layout with sections and products marked that are organic, wheat and gluten free. They also stock I Deal Coffee beans. Their motto is "better price, better food, better bulk" and it shows.

I'm a huge fan of Better Bulk - it's a great addition to the neighbourhood. The owners encourage bringing your own containers (though there are plastic bags if you don't), and now have a section of bulk cleaning products. It's now one of our regular shopping destinations.

I've checked out Better Bulk a few times now. I'm impressed with the quality of products, and the price. I expected to pay a premium for their products, but it beats Bulk Barn by my calculations. It's definitely worth a trip in.

Very cute shop, and I wish I'd heard of it sooner! They didn't have vanilla beans, but the owner assured me they'd be getting some in - as a fairly new shop, they're looking to constantly update their stock. Other than the beans, they had a pretty good selection. Very clean and tidy. As much as I like Bulk Barn, Better Bulk is a classy local shop and I'll be sure to drop in frequently.

I love the Better Bulk store. Very family friendly environment - no issues with navigating the store with your stroller. The owners are very kind and patient with my 3 year old daughters. The girls love our weekly shopping trips to Better Bulk - they get Alphabit pasta and I get awesome coffee. I appreciate that Bryan & Eric support other local businesses too.

It's one of my favourite places to shop! I loved their friendly service and great store so much I decided to help them start a blog until their main Web site is up at Eric recently ordered some Harmony Organic Egg Nog and it really was as divinely sweet as he said it was (he'd originally ordered by request of another customer)! I also go their for all my baking needs - their just around the corner from my house!

It's a very cozy store! Very nice service too!
The selection is quite impressive and the owners are very much welcome for suggestions. Definitely going to visit again!

Question: Does Better Bulk carry Chia Seeds?

Let me know when you get japanese breadcrumbs in -aka 'Panko'

I went there for the first time today, it was really nice.
Clean, good selection + service, reasonable price.

G, Panko is just flakier bread crumbs - unless you are super-fussy about the texture, the regular crumbs work just fine.

Yikes, they used to be good/ok....Not so much anymore!
Selection is getting stale (lots of empty bins/near empty bins) and the service is getting bad. And the store is Way too dark, kind of depressing. I'm sure they will be out of buisness soon.

I'm there every week and I've never had a problem with stale products. This place is a godsend for me; I don't go to The Big Carrot anymore, because Better Bulk is closer and much cheaper. Never had a bad service experience there, either; quite the opposite--they're always friendly and helpful and have brought products in at my request. And I just watched Eric sell a kid eight cents' worth of rice (for a scavenger hunt) with a smile on his face.

Also, to G--I noticed they carry organic Panko now--they're in a bottle or tub or something near the granola.

Thanks for the update

Contrary to Sue M., I think Better Bulk remains a terrific place to shop. Far from being depressing, every time I go in, I come out in a better mood thanks to the true friendliness of the owners. I mean that literally and sincerely--it's not the typical 'have-a-nice-day' baloney. They also have a great selection of products, particularly for those who follow special diets. Despite their relatively small space, they always seem to be getting new and interesting products in. And they work very hard to keep their prices low.

Outstanding service, dedicated to helping people via improving their business. Because of their commitment to the customer, I'm willing to go out of my way (geographically and financially) to support them. Thanks!

Just a note that we've moved to a bigger space, across the street at 2044 Danforth. Thanks for all the bulk love!

Love the new space! Love the selection! Good quality bulk foods and more at an affordable cost at their new location! Great addition to an ever-growing neighborhood! Your Danforth East neighbors love you!!!
