Bike Contest Winner Announced
Behold the winning photo in our recent photo contest to win a Beater Bike. We kept the theme broad (bike-themed) and in response we received an overwhelming number of amazing photos making it an almost impossible challenge for us to pick just one photo as the best.
But, we had to choose just one winning photo so we did. jesse+molls+car+bike (pictured above) was submitted by EvK1. We liked this because the submission was less literal (not just a bike) and we figured there might be a story to be told here. Hopefully we can get EvK1 to shed some light in the comments below.
A big thanks to everyone for participating in the contest. For those interested in learning more about Beater Bikes you can check out the launch party tonight at Resistor Gallery.

This is supposed to be a photo contest. And that image is so wrong on so many levels, starting off with the composition.
That is not photography. It is an eye sore.
Such a disappointment.
This should have NOT been called a PHOTO contest, since you are NOT rewarding photographic skills nor good photography, just whatever you found interesting.
What a great photo - I'm glad it won. :) That said, I'm also partial to the photos of bikes buried in tonnes of snow.
Ahhhhahahah.
First of all. This IS photography because it's a PHOTO.
Starting off with the composition, it shows everything that I wanted it to.
Both the people in this photo are fellow Photojournalists~ and the girl on the bike, Molly McNulty, works for a newspaper in B.C.
The bike in the photo is actually my bike, however it has been in pieces for the past year because my nephew stole my pegs and bolts off the back end and it's sitting in a garage in Bobcaygeon. So! I am in desperate need of a bike!
Yay!

phillip phillip phillip ... the only thing that is an eye sore is your post.
you must be pretty sad that you didin't win eh?
Are you going to post a blog entry with runners up? There were indeed plenty of awesome photos in the Flickr pool.
I'm disappointed too!
What story is this photo telling? I wouldn't have thought about anything related to bike hadn't I known about this bike contest.
Congrats to the winner! Phillip's comment was a bit inappropriate, but nonetheless I think the point he was making buried deep in there somewhere was the fact that there were so many great entries that I'm not particularly sure how the winning photo was selected. It's a good photo (and like blogto says I'm sure there's a story in there somewhere - which begs me to ask if you can't see the story in the photo, why select it in the first place?), but not compared to say the 5th photo in the flickr slide show, or the one with the guy carrying the two small bikes on his back while riding down the street. And there's so many others that in my mind top the photo ultimately selected. Long night blogto?
The photo is fine... there are obviously some bitter losers on this blogto.
Sure, there could have been a better photograph but I don't understand what is exactly wrong with the image above. It has a bike in it, what more do you need for this specific contest? I personally like the photograph. And 'Anonymous on August 13' and Phillip are probably the same person... or both losers in the contest which means, try harder to become as good as a photographer as EvK! ; )
PEACE.
There were so many great photos it was a difficult choice. Everyone on the selection committee had a different opinion so it's no surprise that everyone else does to.
keven - you should be able to see it here regardless of having an account or not: http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/show/?q=beaterbikeblogto&m=pool&w=26909951%40N00
There are 205 photos on flickr with the tag, yet I don't see the winning photo with the tag.
Am I missing something?
I don't particularly care for the winning photo either, but hey -- the judges can choose whichever photo they want. Congratulations to the winner.
Congrats to EvK1 for winning a contest and a bike, but that photo really, really sucks. I'm just saying.
Wow, such bitter grapes and the prize was only a beater bike.
Perhaps we can see a list of runners-up?
Haha, wow there are indeed some bitter people here. Like I said before I think the composition could be better, but when I first looked at it I did see the (or a) 'message', or meaning. I think it's deep, yo.
Hey, congrats to the winner... but agreed... the photo isn't really extraordinary.
Many other pics were better composed, photographed, imagery, and with a better sense of message/story.
I really liked the photo with the guy with two bikes on his back as well... it got my vote! As did a snow buried bike.
But seriously, the whining over photo composition is SO indicative of how some in Toronto view themselves and their art... as if there were a magic line to distinguish good from bad. Maybe bad composition - aka a-typical composition - was intentional? I think it's more interesting than some of the polished 'I think this belongs in a magazine' photographer type of shots... so many tired examples out there.
Congratulations my buddy! I wish I could win a bike!
Even though my opinion is biased, because I know the photographer, at the end of the day there are no rules that dictate whether a picture is good or bad it's personal taste and whether or not it grabs your attention and makes you think. When I see this image I definitely want to know the story. If there's a word or two that describes this photo I would say....livin' the college life. Congrats EVK.
Not my style at all,
but a very compelling image. Probably not in spite of, but BECAUSE it is not my style - very well done ; P
Jonathan.
Congratulations to the winner!! this is indeed a great photo and in my opinion goes beyond the obvious, That's perhaps the hardest thing to achieve in any art form. Ride safe on your new bike and don't forget your helmet, as there are many angry losers out there :)
I don't understand why everyone is so upset at the winner.
I mean, it's not like they disobeyed the rules and submitted SEVEN entries instead of the maximum three.
Oh wait, they did...
i saw all of the photos, and like quite a few, but this one really is unique. it stands out from the rest in look and theme... which i'm sure that's why it won
congrats girl
AWESOME PIC!!! Love the emotion in it and could imagine a million stories behind it! That's real life, not just photography! Congrats!!! You deserve that beater bike!!!
I watched the slide show and I can see 100% why this photo was selected...It's different. It's not trying to be something other than what it is yet it leaves you wanting more. It's not just a moment caught on camera but it's a story. I think that if a photograph accomplishes that then that photographer has talent. I love it.
It's a great photo, I admit. I'm a little surprise that it won, however, since the professional photographer who took it entered 9 photos in the contest (http://www.flickr.com/photos/evk1/tags/beaterbikeblogto/) despite the rule was clearly stated:
"Limit three photo submissions per entrant" (http://www.blogto.com/flickr_forum/2009/08/photo_contest_show_us_your_best_bike/)
I only entered three... maybe if I had entered more, I would have had a better chance? If only I'd known the judges were going to ignore their own rules. Maybe I'm just a sore loser, but this leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth...
