Flickr Forum - February 27th, 2009
Hey Flickr Forum fans. This is probably going to be the last post until the Spring. I'm sick of looking at Winter, and want to focus on some tech posts.

Post in the comments what you want from the Flickr Forum in the Spring. We're thinking about making some changes and would love to know how you think we can make this column more of a conversation on photography for the photogs and photo enthusiasts out there.

1. Untitled, 2. Aaron - 5-0, 3. Close-Act, 4. Let's call this one a write off, shall we?, 5. IMG_4475, 6. Countdown in T - 0:01:00, 7. Happy Birthday, 8. Untitled, 9. Market Mural, 10. The Corner 2, 11. Tall and Short, 12. DSC_6016b, 13. 068.3, 14. Hi Honey I'm Home, 15. TGIF, 16. The Winter Branch and the Sunny Day.

Honestly, I find more gorgeous Flickr photos via the daily postings. Part of the problem here is the tiny photos - they just don't "sell" as well as the larger ones.

That's really more of a click through problem than a lack of discussion though.

I just don't find that much to say about Flickr Forum posts. If you really want to get people discussing photography, you ask their opinions or experiences about things, not invite them to a weekly online art gallery and expect them to stand around and chat about the paintings on the wall - which is essentially all the FF is. I saw a discussion about art documentaries on TV just the other day that summed it up perfectly - the only person who really cares about the artists' "method" is the artist him/her self. Which is why you're only getting the photogs themselves, if you're lucky, commenting on FF posts.

Why not invite folks to post their favorite photo of Toronto X or situation Y, right in the comments? (Bonus points if you could actually post the image code, rather than the link to Flickr.)

You might get some discussion then.

Or ask about best times to shoot @ a location, for example, or discussing your favorite spot to take portraits, or how do you go to major tourist attractions and take a "unique" shot?

Some ideas, my $.02.

It would be really refreshing to see content from contributors outside of the normal dozen whose work seems to get cycled through the pool picks.

I don't imagine MikeR's criteria for selecting photos for the weekly forum is based on looking through "the normal dozen" photographers in the pool of more the 2000 members in the flickr blogTO group. Rather, I would think he makes his selection based on images he feels gives a good representation of the city and are of at least a decent photographic quality.

I thnk he does a good job, myself.

@DS - Michael's correct, I generally don't select photos based on who people are. Except in two cases:

1. I'm trimming down the selections for the week to one of my magic numbers (9/12/16). If you've been featured a lot lately, you're more likely to get pruned out.

2. If I find a photo that I like, but I'm on the fence about including. If the artist is "new" or has a smaller than average Flickr following, they're more likely to be included. I do my best to highlight these artists. Everyone deserves a break and little encouragement :)

I'd say instead of seeking a discussion, just say "Here's the most awesome shit there is," and leave it at that. Sometimes the photo might start a discussion on its own depending on the imagery.

Dare I say it, I'd prefer one a day to a bunch once a week. Definitely more pleasant than the daily deadpool listing.

if you don't post a theme, then all you're going to get is winter pics dude.

make a non-winter theme, and ask people to be considered by adding a "Flickr Forum Submission" tag, and you're set. you can just search the tag instead wading through thousands of pictures of snow.

oh, and wtf about last week, one person getting three selections in one week? were you in bed with him?

I'd like to see half the haters on this thread take a half decent photo themselves. keep up the good work blogto
