Flickr Forum: August 1st, 2008 - Suburbia

Posted by MikeR / August 1, 2008

20080801_ffjpg.jpgThe blogTO Flickr Forum is a weekly sampling of themed photographs taken by Torontonians and aims to not only feature the talent they possess, but also spur dialogue and reveal the stories behind the images.

Today's collection of Toronto photographs is made up of responses to our call for photos that fit the theme "Suburbia". These images were all recently submitted to the blogTO Flickr pool.

To the photographers: we'd love to hear about your photos. A little info on where it was taken and the story behind the photo is always a great start.

To the rest of you, feel free to ask questions to the artists, submit photos to the blogTO Flickr pool for next week's consideration, or just sit back and enjoy our weekly mosaic.

Continue for links to larger versions, and to check out the next theme.

1. The Corridors of Power, 2. City Limits, 3. Downsview subway 3

4. Little boxes, 5. Goodnight Suburbia, 6. Under a Red and Blue Lit Sky

The next theme is "Cycling" - and as always, is open to creative interpretation. We're looking forward to featuring some of your images again, on August 8th.

To be considered for next week's selections:
- In Flickr, add the tag "Cycling"
- Add to the blogTO Flickr pool
- If you have a photo already in the pool, and you would like it to be considered, remove the photo from the pool and re-add it. Only photos added in the past week will be considered.

If you have a theme suggestion, feel free to leave a comment.

Thanks again for including my photo. (Little Boxes)! I couldn't resist the Weeds-esque photo, which was taken from a plane after taking off from Pearson.

Thanks for including my shots "The Corridors of Power" and "City Limits". I shot both with this weeks theme in mind. One thing you notice out in the burbs is that car culture really hasn't gone away. The race to get to and from work results in some pretty daring (and boneheaded) behavior behind the wheel which I tried to capture with City Limits. The other thing I notice going to and from the city is the wall of electrical transmission lines the city is ringed with. Some of the views are incredibly dramatic, especially as they tend to be the only reasonably large open areas in some parts of the city. I shot "The Corridors of Power" from a moving bus to try to capture that drama.

My photo, 'Goodnight Suburbia' was shot in Mississauga at a school near my house. I was just trying to capture the monotony of suburban architecture and how small we are in the grand scheme of things. Thanks for including it in this flickr forum!

Nice. Thanks for selecting my photo 'Under a Red and Blue Lit Sky'. The photo was taken from outside the McCowan RT station in the Pedway during a major quick downpour. Pedway's of course are networks of paths intended to connect pedestrians with different places. The irony of this Pedway is that no one uses them. People will either cut through fields to get to close-by office buildings or cut across busy McCowan Ave. to get to the Scarborough Town Centre. People are like water - they will always take the path of least resistance!
