20070615_fff_590.jpgThe blogTO Flickr Forum is a weekly dialogue for Torontonians and is based on their photographs and the stories behind them.

These images were recently submitted to the blogTO Flickr pool. The people that took the photographs have been invited to participate in discussions about them here. Anyone can start! Don't be shy!

Here are some general starter questions for all nine photographers:

Where/when was it taken?
Is there a story within or about your photograph?

My image "Not by Dan Flavin" is a documentary shot of a work that was part of Luminato, everybody saw the floting horses and the orbs but I bet most people missed this, there were several works displayed in shipping containers along the slip at Parliment street where the "L'Art boat" which should have otherwise been called the "sans art boat" docked. I shot this hand held and the image you see is untouched from the camera except for cropping. The title is a bit of cheek, if you don't know who Dan Flavin is do your own research, it's an unfair swipe as there was more to this work than straight imitation of Flavin including a dimesion of interactivity but I couldn't resist the making the jab.

Norm, you're right, I had no idea they had anything going on at Parliament Street! Shame, I would have gone to check them out.

My image 'Kajama' was taken at Harbourfront just over a week ago. It's the name of the boat used for charter tours of the harbour. I was down at Harbourfront waiting for the Luminato Pulse Front that was to begin much later in the evening. The boat caught my attention and reminded me of all the pirate hype that has been in the movies lately.

White Cowbell Oklahoma was taken at The Horseshoe on the Friday night of NXNE, at about 1:45 AM. In the middle of their song "Sugar City" the crowd started chanting "Chainsaw!" and sure enough they brought one out on stage. You can read more about the show in my article:

My shot is called "suds". Apparently, the fountain at Berczy Park becomes a bathtub for homeless people from time to time (your tax dollars at work). One such occasion was during Woofstock last weekend. The dogs were enjoying themselves in the suds until a Woofstock official came out to warn everyone that the soap in the fountain may not be safe for the dogs. The Lab in my photo didn't seem to mind it too much, though.

My shot is called 'Pulse' - taken at the harbourfront last weekend on what I thought was the last day of the 'Pulse Front' by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. I helped out some tourists by lending them my tripod so that they could get a picture of the lights and this gave me the opportunity to use one as a hand model to get this shot. Surprised at well he did at staying still for 30 seconds.

Lovely selection of photographs for the week! The lab in "Suds" is adorable - I hope he's OK after his potentially toxic sudfest.

My shot is called "Reflected" as was taken outside of the ROM during the architectural opening weekend on Sunday June 3rd. I was making my way over to the ROM, hoping to be able to get in to see the Micheal Lee Chin Crystal designed by Daniel Libeskind. I lucked out and just happened to run into an old colleague who I used to work with at the ROM with who happened to have an extra ticket. I had a blast taking pictures of both the interior and exterior and chose to do them in black and white to highlight the sharp and strong lines of the crystal.

My photo is "Magic Hour Sunset Goodness featuring the Don Valley Parkway"; the title was originally just Don Valley Parkway from Wynford Drive but a flickr member <I>nice+smooth ultramedia</I> commented on how he loved the 'magic hour sunset goodness' so I changed the title from there. As the original title stated, I took it around 9pm on Tuesday at Wynford Drive overlooking the DVP to the north. Throughout this week I took advantage of the lovely weather and continued my series of long exposed sunset shots of expressways in the city. Long exposed shots of expressways may be cliche but I decided to experiment with how they are created. Earlier shots of Highway 404 led me to experiment with overexposing the bottom half of the photograph, so that the roadway looks well lit; around 20 seconds at least when the sun is long gone but the sky is still well lit. I would cover the top half of my lens with my hand, just so the bottom of my hand borders the horizon, and expose the scene for 20 seconds or so. Then I'd take out my hand and expose the sunset for less than a second. Sort of like an improvised way of using a neutral density filter.

I wanted to create this surreal look of long exposed shots that used the expressway as its subject matter. A close friend of mine commented on how one of my shots looked like heaven and hell, with the blues and purples of the sky and the reds and yellows of the expressway creating a contrast of the extremes. From there I kept going, continuing the series and pushing myself to create vibrant, surreal images of expressways. I feel that with the heaven and hell context, especially with the DVP, with the cars we drive to and from work or school or wherever, we are trapped in them like a soul is trapped in hell. The sky is free and filled with colours so soft and untamed. It would be the <i>have you ever wanted to drive up to the skies and free yourself up from the traffic jams of our lives sort of thing.</i>

Thank you for selecting my photo <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/44442672@N00/541791595/">"Asking for a date...in the animal kingdom"</a>. I took this shot at the Harbour Front during the Luminato festival. The two subjects in my photo, Chriz and Sadie, were preparing for their fire parade. They had their faces painted like some kind of animals, perhaps cats. I asked them to pose for me and they kindly agreed. I asked one of them to pose like attacking the other. They tried a few poses, and this one turned out well. Thanks to their cooperation and all the best to their future performance.
