My shot is called "Reflected" as was taken outside of the ROM during the architectural opening weekend on Sunday June 3rd. I was making my way over to the ROM, hoping to be able to get in to see the Micheal Lee Chin Crystal designed by Daniel Libeskind. I lucked out and just happened to run into an old colleague who I used to work with at the ROM with who happened to have an extra ticket. I had a blast taking pictures of both the interior and exterior and chose to do them in black and white to highlight the sharp and strong lines of the crystal.
I wanted to create this surreal look of long exposed shots that used the expressway as its subject matter. A close friend of mine commented on how one of my shots looked like heaven and hell, with the blues and purples of the sky and the reds and yellows of the expressway creating a contrast of the extremes. From there I kept going, continuing the series and pushing myself to create vibrant, surreal images of expressways. I feel that with the heaven and hell context, especially with the DVP, with the cars we drive to and from work or school or wherever, we are trapped in them like a soul is trapped in hell. The sky is free and filled with colours so soft and untamed. It would be the have you ever wanted to drive up to the skies and free yourself up from the traffic jams of our lives sort of thing.
