Flickr Forum: March 2nd, 2007
The blogTO Flickr Forum is a weekly dialogue for Torontonians and is based on their photographs and the stories behind them.
These images were recently submitted to the blogTO Flickr pool. The people that took the photographs have been invited to participate in discussions about them here. Anyone can start! Don't be shy!
Here are some general starter questions for all six photographers:
Where/when was it taken?
Is there a story within or about your photograph?

Have you paid the Booty Tax?

Have you ever gotten a parking ticket while answering a late night booty call? Then you’ve paid the City a booty tax. XYYZ, the website for guys in Toronto, asks you to join in the fight against this tax. Support the creation of the Booty Pass, a $10 overnight parking permit that can be bought online to eliminate the risk of those booty call parking tickets.
Every download of XYYZ's unofficial Booty Pass before February 28, 2007 is a vote in its favour. Proudly display it the next time you're answering a booty call. (We can’t guarantee you won’t get a ticket.) In March, XYYZ will present the vote tally to City Hall along with a petition to have our Booty Pass officially sanctioned (Your vote is completely anonymous. Read our privacy policy.)
I thought it was pretty funny and at the same time it made a lot of sense! There was also an article about the Booty Pass campaign in last weeks Now Magazine!
I took my photo during that bizarre blizzard on Feb 22nd. I was just exiting the Tim Horton's near Spadina & Dundas when I managed to snap this shot. I waited purposely for the street car to enter the frame and it's the only shot I managed to get.

I was treated to a ticket to one of the corporate boxes in the ACC's gondola level (right up at the top)... After checking where the box was on the ACC's website, I figured it was in one of the better spots to get a really nice wide angle shot of the whole arena. Sure enough, it was just off centre at one of the ends. I took a few test shots to get the histogram where I wanted to get detail in as much of the arena as possible and shot manual at those settings for the rest of the night. This was one of about 40 I took. Given the audience-creep that tends to occur at sporting events I determined the best time to shoot would be between halfway through the first period to halfway through the second period - to get the most 'asses in the seats'... Next problem was finding a decent enough spread of players on the ice with a little bit of action - no fun if they're all bunched at the far end or on one side. This was during a shift change, I think. I'm very pleased with the result! There was a fair bit of post work in Photoshop to bring up detail and even out the light using Shadow/Highlights, plus a little bit of unsharp mask (faded for luminosity). The original shot was on the dark side, deliberately, to save details in the highlight areas.
A lot of people like to ensure that the white-balance is correct in their shots. I like to adjust the white-balance to give different moods to my photographs.
Thanks again,
