Toronto Newsgirls Boxing Club

Posted by Staff / Posted on May 27, 2011

Toronto NewsgirlsToronto Newsgirls is a boxing club for women started by Savoy Howe in 1996. I've stopped in many times, but I'm still astounded each time I take in the agility of the women pounding at bags and darting their way around the ring. Along with regular classes and workshops, Toronto Newsgirls offers a special program called "Shape Your Life" for survivors of violence and domestic abuse.

Awesome boxers and coaches. Great classes. Relaxed atmosphere. Never thought this sport was so much fun for the body and the brain. Shape Your Life is a class that's been an important catalyst for me. Gym for women and trans people.

i don't recommend this place at all. It smells and it is the same old boring routine work out. i would try another boxing club up up the street on Carlaw. I try it out in the summer time, no ac, it was so hot and uncomfortable.

Definitely imagine that which you said. Your favorite reason seemed to be at the internet the simplest factor to understand of.
I say to you, I definitely get irked while other folks consider
worries that they plainly don't understand about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the entire thing without having side effect , other people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks

Went to this club for their shape your life program, and was actually abused by the coach and the other women there. Traumatized me further and made me so ill that i still to this day struggle with the lack of resolution or explanation for any of it. I was bullied, sexually harassed around gender and gender expression, treated with inequity, yelled at by the social worker, mocked for my clothes, not given the same things others were given, and ultimately kicked out because the coach went away and the social worker made up lies about me to get me put out permanently. The coach came back and never even so much as talked to me to hear my side or get both sides even....She posted nasty things on face book about me, and refused me to her shape your life and her regular program. They are cliquey, abusive, radical, and just unkind. I suffered so much aftermath; originally i liked her a lot and let my guard down and let myself feel safe only to get screwed over. I got nasty emails from her and hers for like three years afterwards, and she emailed other boxing clubs bad mouthing ME for daring to stand up to her or write about my experience on my blog. empowerment? more like oppression and stifling. and abuse.

This gym was a lifesaver. They have women only times and co-ed where I went with my daughter and my husband. The coaches are very caring and knowledgeable, the environment the most supportive especially for someone that hasn't boxed before. My daughter loved it, she even was encouraged to get back on her bike and start riding again. She's now considering coaching and is in the process of getting her certification where we live now.

The gym isn't overly crowded generally and you can have one to one attention if you need more coaching. There is everything you need in a boxing gym including the warehouse atmosphere where you feel like a real boxer! The equipment is old but it is kept in good shape - you know this isn't boxer-size as soon as you enter the front door. I had wished the gym was open more during the day.

Prior to going I had read the reviews here - but then I was hearing so much positive stuff about the gym that I decided to check it out. I am so glad I did.

Whoever wrote that previous review, I am not even sure she was at this gym. It is such a bizarre I review that I am not sure it's real. I know people sometimes get others to write bad reviews for all kinds of reasons, who knows. I would still be working out at this gym, however, my husband is in the military and we were transferred. I mention this because he is in amazing shape and he came with us for a few of the co-ed sessions and enjoyed it. He said the workouts helped him think about his own training differently.

It's been a few months since I have been back but I still miss it.

Went for the first time last week. Joined on the spot. Supportive and knowledgable group of coaches and boxers. I was looking for a gym and knew what I wanted - yes it's old school like Gleasons complete with the train running by the gym just like Gleasons. I agree the machines are old but they work and are kept running. It smells like a boxing gym - you go there to work and they will kick your ass if that's what you want. I believe its the first (only?) all women's boxing gym anywhere around. Boxing can be a dangerous sport and the coaches give you what you need to be safe while pushing your limits.

by the way, yes, there is no a/c and yes, it's hot and you sweat up a storm even with the huge fans, yes, the building smells industrial but you either 'get it' or you don't. If you want amazing support and the ability to meet all kinds of people or if you want to stay in your cocoon, you totally can. If you don't care for industrial setting, you won't be happy here.

Checked out this gym a few months ago and have been back many times. I joined and now I can access the gym at times that are convenient to me. You have to follow a maze with boxing glove maps along the hallways to get you in. It's hard core, but also very friendly and supportive. I wasn't sure how a dude would be accepted but since joining I bring my girlfriend occasionally and she is gradually getting use to the ass-kicking workouts. You can get in the ring as soon as the coaches know you are safe and won't hurt yourself. You are watched and coached while in the ring too. The coaching is intense, the gear freely available, they could use more updated treadmills but the head coach is always coming up with new ways to kick your butt. It's a tight community and you have a group of friends right away if you are looking for that. Happy with it and the price is lower than most in the city.

by the way, forgot to say I agree with the other post about it being like Gleasons. Very similar.

Highly recommended. Received a gift certificate of four classes for Christmas. I have used 3 already. Agree with the reviews about the coaches and the accepting environment there. I had never boxed before and was nervous going in the first time. The coaches, the other boxers, some were new like me and walked me through the use of the equipment, showed me how to wrap right away and how to safely hit the bags before I hurt myself. Now I feel like a pro. Ultimately I will get in the ring but not quite yet. Yes, the gym is in a warehouse, yes it does look like a real boxing gym, yes it is hot and sweaty but you go there to work out and sweat. I don't think anyone would complain that the men's gyms were hot and sweaty. People of all ages. One older woman was ripped like a body builder and kicked my ass showing me how to hit properly. I wanna be her when i grow up.

Love this gym. This is a real boxing gym with competitor classes, recreational classes, and a program that helps survivors of violence.

The violence survivor program saved my life. It is run by another organization with the gym Opportunities For Advancement. The woman I spoke with was so helpful and she totally understood my troubles right away so I went to check it out. There is nothing like it that I have ever seen before and it helped me more than many years of therapy ever could.

I didn't want to go in the ring and that is completely understood and accepted right at the start. All the people involved in this program should be given Noel prizes for what they have done. I saw the documentary recently and if you have a chance to see it please do it.

I could say so much more but if you are a survivor of violence or trauma and you want to try something new, go to this gym and take the Shape Your Life program.

I did the violence boxing recovery program. I had no idea there was such a thing like this. I wish everyone knew about this. I called the number and got the worker right away who made me feel so understood that I thought it must be some kind of dream.

Its not selfdefense its boxing but you don't have to go to the ring ever if you don't want to. But I liked all the equipment they gave to us to try even the headguard that covers your face didn't freak me out.

Coaches are the best, I get the best workout ever in my life and I have become in the best shape I have ever been in.

I got a chance to see the movie they made about the gym and the program and I pretty much cried the whole way through. It was sad but so strong at the same time.
