Where to watch free movies in Toronto
Free movies in Toronto are not limited to the summer months. While, yes, there are plenty of outdoor screens just waiting for your camping chair in July, there are several venues around the city offering free flicks all year round. Granted, you'll likely have to look elsewhere if you're keen on the latest horrid Jennifer Lopez rom-com, but if you're into classic films, new documentaries, or indie flicks, you might want to check out some of these spots. So for winter, rainy weather, or when you're just trying to save a buck, here are a few places to watch free movies in Toronto. Film
This Week in Rep Cinema: We Need to Talk About Kevin, Waterlife, Pom Poko, Girl Model, Crispin Hellion Glover
This Week in Rep Cinema features second run and classic film selections from cinemas such as the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, The Fox, The Revue, The Royal, Toronto Underground Cinema, the Projection Booth, TIFF Bell Lightbox and more. This Week in Rep Cinema starts on a somber note this week because one of my favourite hidden gems of the city has a countdown to shutdown, the NFB Mediatheque. Due to CBC cuts, the NFB will be reduced to a simple gallery exhibition space and the viewing stations and theatre will be shut down. You only have until September to enjoy one of the more unique facets of cinema in the city. Don't waste it.

Images Festival highlights for 2012
This year marks the Images Festival's 25th year, or what could be their quarter-life crisis but the festival is back and bigger than ever. The Images Festival, a celebration of film and video art in Toronto, is rolling with its age quite well and making reference to its long and varied history along the way. It's the second oldest film festival in the city and acts an alternative oasis for filmmakers to present works that are outside the norms of regular festivals. The highlight of last year's edition included a live performance of Fucked Up playing accompaniment to silent film West of Zanzibar and the strong documentary-hybrid Rivers and My Father. This years festival runs from April 12th to 20th and I've selected some choice pieces you may just need to see.

The final films in the Attack the Block and Bangkok Dangerous series end this week, with Golem appearing for one last time at the Lightbox and then Vampire's Kiss. Second-run programming just got kicked up a notch as the phenomenal Genie Award-winning film Monsieur Lazhar can be found at the Revue as well as this year's Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Film, A Separation. Sports documentaries also feature heavily at the Bloor this week, with Hot Doc's favourite Fightville and the classic Ali doc, When We Were Kings.
