Brokeback Mountain -- a comment

Posted by Kristine / December 12, 2005

05dec12brokeback.jpgI have but one thing to say to Brokeback Mountain stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger.

Get over it.

If I see one more Entertainment interview with these two going on and on about how difficult it was be heterosexual and doing a movie with hot and heavy gay love scenes I swear I am going to be ill. It's like listening to eight year olds talking about getting cooties.

After all the mincing and protesting way too much, I hope that the film is worth it. I hear that it is but I will believe it when I see it.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the only "angle of access" that the American popular media can play, in terms of drumming up a story that the majority of their readership might actually read. Times like this, I just try to follow my old maxim: hate the publicists (because we should all be doing that anyway), and let the film speak for itself.

Hmm. Maybe it's the editing? Like the whole straights-playing-gay (rather than the other way around as per usual) is the most audience grabbing?

It's entirely possible that 90% of the interviews (assuming they aren't just running the same clip over and over) were about research or riding horses or something. But the interviewer was all 'was it hard to get hot, being straight and all?' and the dudes were all like 'uh, yeah' -

though really, Jake and Heath should be manly enough to admit how hot the other is. because, come on, who wouldn't want a piece of that?

are dudes afraid of being perceived as gay? (besides tom cruise, I mean)
