Market Village in Markham... catch the latest chinese flicks from hong kong have fabulous chinese snacks(such as soy sauce pig ears) during the movie, and Chinese food for dinner after the show, then find the same movie dvd you just watched selling for 6 bucks a piece in one of the stores at Pacific Mall right next door ;-)

Cumberland theater in Toronto. I think they offer a great selection of not so big budget, quality type of films. Plus the theatre is near Bloor St., you can easily grab a bite to eat before or after the movie at one of the great restaurants near by.

My favourite place these days is the Grande @ Yonge & Sheppard. Not only are they close to home for me, but it's a bit of an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city below. All of the theatres are large, it's never too crowded, and they have really balanced programming. They'll show the latest blockbuster, but also support the independants and foreign films as well.

The Bloor Cinema, by a long shot. They play the most variety of films, and are friendly to independant artists. I think of the Bloor as a place that is run FOR the community, to give us affordable and interesting movies to watch. Not to mention it's a beautiful, sprawling interior, which is a refreshing change from the uniformness of most commercial cinemas. The Bloor is truely a place to enjoy movies and have a good time- which is the pinnacle of art and entertainment.

Although not always showing the best features, I love to see flicks at the cinesphere. There's something about the long walk to box office and sitting inside a giant triodetic dome that builds anticipation for the film. There's not a seat in the place with an obstructed view, and it so big that it brings you into the picture. It's larger than life!

The best place to catch a flick in Toronto for me is my living room. I rent a film from Queen Video then watch it on my couch. I then check out ALL the special features, especially the director commentary. This way I learn more about the director and can appreciate the film more fully.

Oh just in case you are wondering.. Market Village is located at Kennedy and Steeles... I think those dvd stores were busted a few weeks ago by the police... however, there is one just opened recently in Times Square, located on highway 7 and Leslie, the store is right next to a restaurant inside the mall called Richmond Court, which actuallly has cheap and fabulous Chinese food, should try their BBQ duck, roast pork, and fresh lobster, yummy

Though I'd second the Bloor Cinema and Queen St. Video in the Annex, I find The Paramount downtown so easily accessible and in an exciting part of town (with plenty to do), that it's the best place to screen first run movies when they come out.

I really like the ambiance of the old theaters, however I must say that recently I prefer going to films at the Grande at Yonge and Sheppard. They usually have a great selection of some of the less advertised films, as well as a good variety of the big blockbusters.

They also have excellent popcorn (a feature not to be underestimated, the smell of burnt popcorn can really ruin the whole movie experience for me).

My favorite toronto theatre would be CINEMATQUE ONTARIO (at the AGO). They show case film makers like Atom Egoyan, Federico Fellini and Norman Mcclaren, a few great filmmakers of our time. Often they have guest speakers, including directors, producers and critics of the film.

I find that the movies showcased at Cinematque Ontario contain substance, direction and history. I enjoy the movies because as filmmakers I think it's important to understand all aspects and eras of film.

Thank you Cinematque for providing Toronto a chance to view some wonderful films

And the winner is......Last but not least, Angela Chao. We appreciated all entries. It was a tough decision but uncovering the hidden gem of Cinemateque won us over.

so, what do I get as runner-up?

I still mourn the Uptown. It really was the best. Second runner up would have to be the Varsity. Funniest is Cumberland where if you sit near the back you can hear the clicking of the projector.

Definitely the FOX in the beaches. It still has a single screen with velvet covered reclining seats. All restored with great sound and a cozy intimate setting. Makes you feel like you're in an old movie just by sitting there.
