TIFF announces food, film, science focused film series

TIFF Subscription SeriesTIFF has announced three new subscriptions set to launch in February 2012. The series — Food on Film, Books on Film, and Science on Film — will each feature six screenings followed by a guided discussion. Subscriptions are currently on sale for TIFF members and will go on sale for non-members on today. A couple of the series include offers for free stuff for those who sign up early, so interested parties may want to act fast if the incentives prove enticing. Many guest speakers will be announced in the upcoming weeks, but for now, here is an overview of what each series will be about.

The top 10 films in Canada for 2011

top films canadaSince 2001, TIFF has celebrated our national cinema by honouring the ten best Canadian features and short films of the year, and then screening them for Toronto cinephiles under the elegant banner known as Canada's Top Ten. This year - the event's tenth edition - appears to be a strong one, with big names like Cronenberg, Maddin, and Vallée predictably landing on the winners list. All of the Top Ten films will screen at the TIFF Bell Lightbox between January 5 and 15, typically with the directors in attendance.

Anonymous drops in on a few cinemas this week, the uninspired political thriller that attempts to convince audiences about the true scandalous identity of Shakespeare (lover of the Queen, the Earl of Oxford) when it turns out we just don't care. You can find it at the Fox Theatre and the Revue this week.

A bunch of recommended films are still floating around at the Fox, specifically The Guard and Moneyball. A Bollywood classic screens at The Projection Booth on Sunday and Midnight in Paris is STILL PLAYING in second run at the Carlton Cinema.

Pomegranate Film FestivalFor the sixth year in a row, the Pomegranate Film Festival is bringing roughly a dozen Armenian features — and even more shorts — to Toronto audiences. Opening on Thursday night with a programme of short films followed by the romantic thriller The Jubilee Visitor, the festival will continue throughout the weekend until Sunday, screening films at both the Regent and the Hamazkayin Theatre.

The European Union Film Festival wraps up at the The Royal this week, just in time for the Toronto Serbian Film Festival to begin on Saturday, December 3rd. The Projection Booth is showing two classic Vincent Price films until December 1st, The House on Haunted Hill and The Last Man on Earth. Otherwise, it's a bit of a quiet week, or it was as of Sunday, as several cinemas had yet to post their December calendars!
