on my way to the passport office on Victoria, i happened by Prairie Girl so picked up a 12 pack of minis. certainly abit pricey at $22 but worth every penny! wow! am used to the dufflet cupcakes at loblaws-maple leaf gardens which are abit tasteless but these...i've never had such amazingly flavoured cupcakes and icing. usually icing is just a bunch of sugary gloop, here they pay attention to it too and give it the full flavour treatment. run don't walk to Prairie Girl and i think it says in this article that they have 2 locations so will try the other one next. trust me on this one]]>

This is to Angie - Hmmm I smell a competitor, it is so obvious that you feel the need to write something negative about another company. I know for a fact that Dessert Lady does not freeze their cupcakes. They bake their cupcakes fresh from scratch everyday. It is not polite to make up stories that are not factual, ask any staff member if they make their cupcakes everyday.]]>

Flour Studio IS amazing and my favourite! They care about the way their cupcake tastes and doesn't use cute deco to cover anything up. The cake is a perfect mixture of density, moistness and flavour. You can tell they use quality ingredients - the flavours are rich but never too sweet. It's perfect!

I haven't tried all of the options on this list, but having done a cupcake tour of Queen East, I agree that Desmond and Beatrice and Life is Sweet are the best on that strip. Bobette and Belle have a cute shop but the cupcakes are just ok.

D&B did the cupcakes at my kid's first birthday and we got many many compliments. SO GOOD.]]>

When is the cupcake fad going to be over?
It's the lowest common denominator when it comes to baking.

Between the amount of hamburger joints and cupcake bakeries in this city you'd think every dropout with BBQ and Easybake oven decided to open an establishment.

I can't believe Sweet Escape Patisserie in the Distillery is not on here! They have amazing cupcakes. Best buttercream I've ever had. So light and smooth, and their cupcakes are to die for. I do not say this often but they are. Their custom cupcakes are amazing too. I order gluten-free from them and though they aren't cheap ($37/dozen), they are absolutely amazing. And their vegan cupcakes are delicious too (same price for custom). Definitely recommend! I've been going there for nearly 3 years now and I've yet to be disappointed.

Yes, I agree, the best way to really figure out if a cupcake is good is to have it without any icing. Now the Flour Shoppe produces cupcakes sooooo good, that the icing is really just the cherry on the sundae. They are so moist and the best part they taste creamy, yes creamy. Not sweet and they don`t have the chemical after taste. You have got to try it. You can set the icing on the side (cause the icing is also sooo good) and try the cake by itself. It will make your taste buds dance. ]]>

The Cupcake Shoppe on Yonge ( just North of Eglinton) is all presentation and no substance. The choice of cake is unimaginative and limited. Taste is dry and uninspiring. The icing ( which is usually the most decadent of a cupcake and the "first impression") is lackluster to say the least ( and I'm being generous!)

If you want cupcakes that look good in pictures, this is the place to go for "reasonably priced" photo op but if you're looking for taste? Trek across the street to Metro and grab a box of 6 for 4.99.]]>

Yesterday I made the trip to the Cake Opera Co on Eglington Avenue West and had two cupcakes, The Queen of the Night with Valrhona 70% dark chocolate buttercream, crunchy chocolate pearls and toasted cocoa nibs, and I saved for later the Cherubino, a chocolate cupcake injected with creamy toasted hazelnut buttercream and topped with almond buttercream and a Cake Opera Co. candied almond. I thought the Queen of the Night was the best cupcake, probably the best dessert I'd ever had in my life. Then after dinner I had the Cherubino which was better than any opiates I've ever been prescribed. This is the shop that Julia Roberts and Nicole Ritchie used to bake their wedding cakes. It has been featured in People Magazine, The Globe and Mail and Macleans. While their wedding cakes are beyond the budget of most mortals, their cupcakes are divine and render any "best cupcakes in Toronto" article rather ridiculous. These are the best cupcakes on the planet. ]]>

Hi Ryan,
Love the blog, though I'll admit - this is the first time I've left a comment. I've recently checked out a new cupcake place called SugarTiers up in Markham. Very unique when compared to some of the names you've listed. I remember Toronto Star once writing about their Red Velvet Cupcake and I'm a believer after I tasted it a few weekends ago. Do you have any colour of this location and how they pare up against your list? Thanks.

Their cupcakes are a decent size and their buttercreams are great (they don't do sugar frosting). Their prices are fair for the quality you get. Places like Miss Cora and Designer Cookies are expensive and the product is poor. The other cupcake shop that is not listed and that is pretty good is Dlish on Queen St. ]]>

Mabel's on Roncesvalles also has AMAZING cupcakes... not a lot of varieties like these specialty cupcake stores, but totally yum nonetheless.

The vanilla icing even has little specks of vanilla bean! Tastes like a luxe oreo frosting. *salivating*]]>
