I liked this article, and agreed with many of your points. My problem with American news is its insularity. Except for things like the war in Iraq and the latest disaster-spree, they pretend the rest of the world is of absolutely no interest to their viewership. Trying to get news about Canada or the EU or anywhere else is really hard when I'm down there on business. I've always enjoyed the CBC's even-handed approach to world and national affairs.

I think the CBC will survive this fiasco. I miss the evening newscasts, but maybe this will mean it will come back revitalized. I can only hope. ]]>

You bring up a lot of interesting points - will the '00s be known as an era of fear, disaster and propaganda?

I'm all for the media becoming more democratic and experimental - I have a degree in TV and Radio and I barely watch TV because I feel so uninformed afterwards.

My concern with the lockout is frankly for the workers - sure Peter and George probably have a tidy sum off which to live (much like the top eschelon of the locked out hockey players), but what about everyone else?

News/media should be free and open to all, but the employment situation for media professionals in TO has been difficult since SARS, and the increasing trend towards outsourcing means buying cheap crappy TV from producers in the States. Where are all these talented techies going to go?

And should Canada really have to suffer through the kind of crap shows that result from people buying the cheapest instead of the best programming?

I'm not in Canada but i used to read Toronto news on CBC, which disappeared now... forever?

About quality of the US TV (though strangely once I heard a Brit on BBC!!! extolling it) - this what I saw and what I can see in limited version - makes me believe it is mostly stupid propaganda, for stupid people (sorry Americans but just try to be different) - if they only believe in it.

The cream of the cream in it is FOX News, something really hillarious...]]>

Mr. Spiderman:

To be clear: I was insulting the quality of the television and not the people. I was left with the impression that their poor TV standards leaves the populace rather ignorant about a whole lot of things. The CBC had always treated it's audience as intelligent adults. At least on the CBC you can say fuck.]]>

*on soapbox*

Odd as this may sound, the only thing I've been missing on CBC Radio is Radio Overnight. Given the choice, I would quicker listen to Radio Netherlands or Radio Africa.

As it is, listening to CBC online is near nye impossible as the buffering is constant. So at work I listen to National Public Radio. At least the Americans - particularly Black Americans - are not having an identity crisis.

I love CBC, I really do but I have tired of the CBC telling me what my culture as a Black person is. My dealings with CBC (as a would-be writer) is that the only thing of import to Black women is da kink in my hair. I appreciate the promo CBC did for the play but that is not the only thing that we are interested in.
