Agree with Anthony above me. Lahore tikka hut is nasty - over cooked, greasy and not very 'wallet-friendly'(in spite of the lacklustre atmosphere). I am surprised at the hype this place keeps garnering... Maybe it's the location that keeps them running. I for one stay away from there. Also, the owner isn't from Lahore but from Uganda, in East Africa. I have yet to come across an indian buffet in Toronto that serves white, breast chicken meat as opposed to dark, rubbery thigh pieces. If anyone knows such a place in Toronto, please let me know. I wouldn't mind extra for better quality meat.

My favorite hang out, albeit ' greasy spoon' atmosphere is Simba Grill on Donlands and O'Connor. They serve a mean barbeque, great tikka and beef and amazing curries.

Well I have been eaten mostly all the places mentioned on here , I am from UK and since there I have been a great fan of Indian Food. I am not at all convinced with the restaurant list provided above..there is something wrong with this guys..if a place is small doesn't mean that their food is not good..I would definitely recommend as Shannon has mentioned above" The Place to go and not only the price but the Quality and the freshly made food is none to other. Yes it is "Bombay On the Lake" at Lakeshore..truly authentic food..Butter Chicken is BEST in Toronto and Lamb Curry is amazing..I have been going there since 3 years and service is exceptional..If you haven't tried then you cannot compare with any of the restaurant mentioned above..I rate Bombay as one of the Ten restaurant in Toronto.

CMay I recommend a pakistani / IndianFood Take-out place in Mississauga called Zeerah. I have tried quite a few items on the menu and I have found each and every item better than most of the other places I have been to in GTA. There seekh Kababs, Butter chicken, Bun Kababs, Nihari and Haleem are best tasting. Sorry forget to add Biryani. I would highly recommend this plce to all Pakistani / Indian food lovers.

As a Pakistani, I think the partition of the Indian sub-continent into India, Pakistan and what eventually became Bangladesh was a mistake, and agree that there is much that is shared between the countries. Yet that does not mean that the cuisines of the three countries are identical, as Tashrin has pointed out. To call something 'Pakistani' as opposed to 'Indian' is to say something quite specific about the food. They may be 'similar' enough for some, but for many people from that part of the world, the differences you consider minor are quite significant and obvious to them.

Butter Chicken is a curry invented for people who do not eat curry! Please refrain from using this dish as a benchmark for fine Indian food.

As for my two cents...I would not set foot in Banjara after my last experience, and the Lahore Tikka House' food is far too greasy and over oiled for my arteries (although probably the most authentic place on the list).

I'm so dissapointed with the tally of best indian/butter chicken/samosas & dosas in Toronto. To clarify, do you consider GTA such as Brampton or Mississauga or only what's considered Toronto? The Indian community in GTA at large will agree The Host is bar none the best restaurant, but to not make it in the list - mind boggling!

I must disagree with PHO, as a Bangladeshi native I must let you know that not only are the cuisines of Bangladesh, East Bengal, North India, South India, Pakistan and Srilanka widely different in terms of the spices, recipes, ingredients and methods they use, they wildly vary in taste. To state that all of them have the same flavour profile must mean one has never experienced any of these cuisines from their authentic sources. It's sacrilegious to define them all as the same or even similar, please.

As for Gerrard street, if one wants south indian food, its udupi palace, north indian + pakistani its lahore tikka who also has the best kulfi on the street, the best buffet in t.o is little india on queen west, for Bangladeshi food one must venture to swiss and anondo on danforth between main and vp; finally one should never ever miss out on the kebabs from Mekkah outside donlands station on danforth.

I'm going to suggest that Banjara's second location--on Eglinton East is actually the classier of the two and should be mentioned.

Also, Earth, a restaurant on Yonge Street north of Cummer is worth checking out: http://www.earthindian.com/index.aspx

Other commentators--please advise where you go for Indian when you are on Gerrard. I generally find myself overwhelmed by choice and underwhelmed by bad buffets. I'm curious to hear what people recommend.

For once I actually agree with the top choice in this top ten, i.e. Banjara. No doubt there's better Indian food to be had in the GTA but I think it's the best balance of price, selection, quality, and convenience.

Most of the remaining places as well as most places suggested in the comments are, in my opinion, nothing special, though I'm sure they're personal favourites of some.

I am surprised that Hopper Hut was put on here. If you're only going to pick one Sri Lankan restaurant I think Sri Lankans or those that know the cuisine would easily choose Babu Catering as the best spot in the city.

Finally, surprised that Mother India/Gandhi didn't appear. It's massively popular (see Yelp for example) and offers something a little different that the majority of places on the list.

@Ruby: Mela doesn't exist anymore according to the link you posted.

I knew someone would probably bring this up. The concepts of "India" and "Pakistan" are made up (heck, Pakistan is actually an acronym). Calling Lahore Tikka House's food Pakistani because of its name and owners is kind of a stretch. The subcontinent is comprised of many regions and those regions are where the cuisine breaks off. Some of the regions even straddle two different countries like Bengal with India (state of West Bengal) and Bangladesh and of course, Punjab (there's one in India and in Pakistan; Lahore is in Pakistani Punjab). Pakistani cuisine is essentially North Indian cuisine, as is Bangladeshi, similar flavour profiles and techniques that ultimately diverge due to regional availability of certain ingredients and religious customs.

I would add Anjappar Chettiand to this list, they have locations in Brampton and Scarborough and even ones overseas. Really top notch South Indian food (avoid their North Indian menu options, not that its bad, but you'd want to save room for what they're really good at).

I love Indian food and have tried many of the restaurants in India Baazar and downtown Toronto. A newly-discovered gem of a restaurant for me is Agra on 4850 Yonge St. I work around the area and my colleagues took me to lunch there. I was impressed with the food and service. Returned there for dinners. It's cheaper than most Indian restaurants in Toronto with comparable (or better) food and services. The butter chicken here is a must-try along with the lamb Rogan josh. My picky gf had the talapia fish and she had no complaints. I find that mango lassi goes great with Indian food and theirs is very refreshing and just the right about of tanginess and sweetness.

I totally love this place as well~
It's a place I take my friends to eat Indian food.
Haven't meet single person that doesn't love the food there.

Although I find Little India down half a block from Babur offers good lunch buffet for tight wallet.

If you want something north of the city you got to get yourself to Karmasutra. From their soup to unbelievably tantalizing curry and stew list, this place with give your taste buds a treat of a life time. If you get a waiter named "Eddy" he will give you the best reccomendations depending on how you feel.

i'd argue that lahore has the best food but in terms of over all pleasure quotient it's definitely a deserved ranking. and drinking 'thums up' with your food is always a welcome treat.
