I feel like picking July 1 - showing some Canada love.

But I don't think the dirt will insulate... it's a dark colour, so it'll trap the heat from the sun and warm up the snow/dirt clump of... ummm... goodness or doom? I can't decide yet.]]>

Fools! Try late June/early July.

Back in 1999 (yes after those massive January snowstorms) the snow mountain down on Unwin Ave. near Cherry beach survived into August. Yep, all that dirt acts like a Thermos to keep the cold stuff cold.]]>

When I was a kid we used to regularly check out a giant heap of snow like this each Spring. The snow came from the mall parking lots, and as it melted, we found all sorts of things that the shoppers had lost - including money and jewelery. ]]>

When I was taking photos of the pile in Feb the workers said they had spotted one of those massive concrete curbs in the pile. Who knows what else is in there. They were thinking about putting bets on when it would finally melt as well, I'm thinking May 18th. I feel bad for all the apartments that live right near there looking out onto that thing! ]]>

I have been watching this mass as well. I am concerned about the toxicity of the melt. Yikes. wiper fluid, salt, ground squirrel, oil etc. I wonder what they do with the leftovers?

Incidentally, Ottawa's Lebreton snow mountain this year is out of this world. I won't be surprised if it's still going in July. I seriously could not believe how much snow was on the ground when I went home for easter.]]>

We used to get a mountain about that size every year on Lebreton Flats in Ottawa.. It was usually gone about mid June. It rains more here though, so let's say June 1.]]>
