There was one more serious fire: Holy Trinity Church and the old buildings of Eaton's being demolished for phase 2 of the Eaton Centre.
It was so confining, the temporary command post was on the top floor of the newly opened hotel on the south side of Queen St., opposite City Hall.

From that height (42 storeys) the fire department people were able to figure out a strategy to contain the blaze.

Ironically, the new chief of the TFD had just been on the job less three weeks.

I have a B&W image to add to that collection but this is of te recent Queen Street fire (as you can see from the tower beyond). Click the hyperlink associated with my name or try going here: http://sparklite.shutterchance.com/photoblog/The_Queen_Street_Fire:_Ruined_Streetscape_/

On another note this is a nice little piece of history that has been written here. I'd not heard about the pier 9 story before.

Thank you for highlighting some of Toronto's history. I had never heard of any of these incidents prior to today.
I also appreciate you honoring those firefighter, both from now, but also from the past, who bravely led the charge to try and save what and whom they could.

Insightful and witty, as always. Great post Graeme!

After fire and destruction comes rebirth and innovative growth. Sad, but part of the perpetual cycle of life.
