The levy on recordable media isn't what really gets us by when it comes to file sharing, though, it doesn't hurt. What really gets us by is when Judges interpret leaving a file on your hard drive which may or may not get copied by others as being the same as having a photo copy machine in a library filled with copyrighted books and literary works.

That analogy is brought up half way through this 2004 article.

Keep in mind that the RIAA ran ads "Home Taping is killing the music industry" when cassette decks came out, and they also survived until this decade on CDs which people used to repurchase their back catalog in droves. The recording industry of yesteryear made a huge lump of their profits in double and triple selling the same product to the same consumer. With Apple calling the shots when it comes to digital downloads they're looking for any and all possible ways to get their profits back up now that people aren't repurchasing their back catalogs, instead choosing to "rip" the songs they already purchased in a previous format.]]>

Isn't the levy on recordable media what provides the, basically, legal file-sharing situation in Canada? Why is this a bad thing?]]>
