we have a hospital that will be close because of Laura Albanese. We have many, many artists that live within the community. we have daycare...we need more...we have a GO Station. we have unique businesses like World of Cake, squibbs, peters babershop - hockey thene, nice little bakery etc.....we have many local groups and many caring residents that are tired from trying to clean up. but we have little help from all 3 levels of local government officials, no idea how they keep winning....]]>

great, in-depth piece. a few other observations from a recreation guy:

-lots of parkland and park, but SEVERELY limited recreational facilities (community centres, libraries, arenas, pools) compared to other Toronto/GTA neighbourhoods
-no mall
-no subway
-no hospital
-few day care spots

i like the mention of urban arts and frontlines. but Weston has no YMCA, no Boys and Girls Club, no coaches (track and field, wrestling, basketball, hockey, soccer-why? parents have no time to volunteer, disconnect between older generation and younger)
-service clubs -usually a great source of funds and volunteers w-are weak and non-existent for the children and youth there
- no artists live there
- no dance / martial arts studios

and as he said no business

i love the place too, it's totally been underserviced though. paul ferreira would be a key catalyst and leader to bring this area back into the fold. he was briefly the MPP for the area (replaced by a disconnected Lib-Albanese-who was funded by the tonks machine)

a bit of a rambling post]]>

I love Weston. I've lived in this small, beautiful Weston home for 20+ years, and I still love it. I work in the area, and my small business supports (with assistance) many businesses in the area. To reiterate: I LOVE WESTON.]]>

Thanks Vickey for the mention in your post! And thanks to Chris for a wonderfully full and detailed description of our community as well a pic and mention of our store -- I only wish I had been here when you came in.

We have lost a great deal of our history, our architecture and our 'main street' since we amalgamated with the City of York in 1967. The reasons are too vast for a blog. Vickey and her neighbours spearheaded a movement in Weston Village to protect our homes from greedy developers a number of years ago with great success -- they stopped a heritage property from being destroyed and it became the impetus to create a Heritage Conservation District. We completed Phase 1 last year and have begun our journey into Phase 2/3 which is about 4.5 times larger than the first. Anyone living between Church Street, Pine Street, William Street and Rosemount Ave. will be part of the second phase and we encourage and welcome all to join our efforts. We will be doing research on each and every house in the district and need homeowners to be active participants in this research. Any detail of your home -- its history, its former occupants, that you can pass along is extremely important. At the very least, we need each person to fill out a questionnaire regarding the simplest details such as the lot number so that we can do further research down at the archives. We will have a website up and running in the very near future and will be hosting another meeting on May 28th for our AGM.

If you are interested in helping, please call 416-241-9322.]]>

We moved to Weston almost 2 years ago now. It is a wonderful community and we've gotten quite involved. You forgot to mention Hallowe'en- I've never seen such a turn out. Thanks for such a great summary. We need to build awareness of our wonderful community.]]>

I believe you have captured the true essence of Weston both past and present. Born in 1950 and living in Weston until my mid-teens I long for what once was our own Mayberry. Going through Weston last summer with my cousin doing some family research I was shocked at the change. My earliest memory is Hazel; my Mother working at Kresge's, visiting the library and in later years skating at the Lion's Club arena. We stopped there and that familiar arena smell brought back many memories. Now, there is a place where time has stood still. I smiled as I walked through the building staring at the same two-toned freshly painted blue walls. Those feelings stay with us forever and that is the feeling I want to share. I don't know how to get people's attention to realize what we are losing; I sometimes think it comes with age but often times it is too late by then. Admittedly, it was not on my list of priorities until I was older. Your story has inspired me and I will continue my pursuit within the town I now live before another time is lost. Thank you,]]>

Great overview, I lived in Weston for a few years with my grandparents in the early 80's. My great grandfather had a store on Weston road and was a councilman in the 1940s. Brings back lots of memories.]]>

What a great observation of my community. You hit the nail on the head in a lot of ways. But... and there is always a but..... you view home owners as a select few of richer middle class people..... I'm not rich in monatarty means but... I almost own a home on "The wrong side of the tracks"..... I've worked hard to get where I am & my family is very involved in the community. We also try to support the local business community..... we are also involved in the historical community & are also opposed to blue 22 as it is. There are many of us trying to intigrate the community... we don't have all the tools & are working so hard to survive(14,16,18 hrs of work a day not to mention at least an hour commute each way....) & maintain possession of our own homes , It's a struggle! Yes, we do what we can. I try & make contact every day with the "Apartment Dwellers" & try to get them to care....... that's the key....... reach out & interact. Be inclusive! If you've got any great ideas I'm willing to try & impliment them..... Lets make this a community we can all be proud of.... (Perhaps get rid of some of the dollar stores & put in more businesses like Squibs, the Bakery, Poongs (sp), Peter Anan, & the gentrified community just might shop downtown Weston.) I know that I would prefer to support community business if what I needed was within walking distance.... I'm sure the apartment dwellers would appreciate the same thing. Contact me if you have any ideas or answers I'd be willing to help.

I'm not sure you mean paraphrase, since it's generally applied to a restatement of someone else's words or text, not one's own. Summarize, perhaps? I was the first person to point out how long this is, believe me, I was there when it happened. You have my permission to use your scrollbar as wildly as you like on this page, if it gives you so much trouble going right through from top to bottom.

It might be 'a brief encounter' for you, but hasn't been for me, and left me with a lot to convey.]]>
