I completely agree with Paul! Eating in Ematei is like eating in an izakaya in Japan. Personally, I hardly ever eat sushi. However, I LOVE nabe in winter and it was excellent at Ematei! Warning: it's supposed to be for 2 but it could easily feed 4. Ha ha, guess they figure gaijin need twice as much! I can't wait to go back and try the oyako-don, tonkatsu, udon, soba, omrice etc. Ematei rocks my world!]]>

We always choose Ematei for special occasion celebrations. I especially look forward to the conch soup - unique, I think, to Ematei. Delicious, light, seafoody-taste with tender bits of conch meat, served in a conch shell resting on a bed of sea salt. You pour the soup from the natural spout of the shell into a little cup (like a sake cup) and sip conch-y ambrosia!]]>

I love Ematei; I used to eat there more often back when I lived on St. Patrick St. I haven't been there in a while, but your post and yummy pics make me want to go back there again soon.]]>

i've found them closest to an izakaya experience.

the sushi is alright but the ramen, sukiyaki and izakaya style dishes (like delicious and large panko crusted oysters) are the stars of the show here.]]>

well i'm sold - i will be going there soon to check it out :)

also, i know the Rainbow Roll is kind of gimmicky, but i assume that japan has plenty of crazy maki we've never even imagined so i don't feel "too anglo" ordering them. they give you a sample of all the restaurant's fish and, in that regard, are also a good thing to order upon one's first visit to a new japanese restaurant. ]]>

I just recently moved back to Toronto after 7 years in Japan, and I have been on the lookout for good Japanese restaurants. This is very welcome news.]]>

went today (saturday) at 2pm, and it was _closed_, which was odd, considering a big 'open sunday' sign. maybe it's a dinner-only thing. maybe it says that in the review and i missed it. oh well. thanks for the tip.]]>

yes, of course not. i never meant to imply that non-japanese "sucks"... the majority of japanese establishments in toronto are korean run, and i love many of them. even in japan these days to certain extent, this is the case. it's just nice to enjoy a meal prepared in a way that's at least true to how they do it in japan, and that's what Ematei was for me at least :)]]>

Their sushi chefs are Japanese but actually, the main chef inside the kitchen is Chinese. Not to say their non-sushi items are mediocre but that non-Japanese prepared doesn't automatically mean suck.]]>
