half-dozen timer

Also, to back up on 'neighbourhood mom's comment above, they have ridiculous seating policies. There were a grand total of 3 people there when I went with my girlfriend, but the tables by the window were empty and marked reserved. When asked, they said that they weren't reserved for anyone in particular, just groups of 3 or more. Keep in mind that the rest of the place has tables grouped such that they seat 4.

We sat uncomfortably at a middle table in the interior while the tables by the windows remained empty for the duration of our meal. I hope that group of 3+ comes in and makes alienating other customers worth it. Really, what's the point of that policy?

This place relies heavily on its location and decor for its success.

Pros: Food is pretty good; prices aren't so bad; the decor and location are great, as is the patio.

Cons: Service is below-average and can be downright unpleasant if you get the wrong waitress. I don't mean to condemn the place, but there are too many waitresses there with attitudes that make you wish you had just gone somewhere else. The portions also seem to be getting smaller.

There are better options on the street, it's best to pass this one by unless everyone else is full.

I came here for the first last weekend. Not only was service slow, but food was BLAND. I had the lamb chops and my boyfriend had the pan fried pickerel. We were very disappointed. The side dishes that came with the main were a big chunk of boiled broccoli and rounds of carrots. Just boiled, not seasoned at all. The "aromatic" rice was not aromatic at all either.
Wouldn't come back again.

Neighbourhood mom

Two years ago I went to By the Way Cafe for lunch with my business partner. The food and service were average. Last week I decided to take my family (husband and 2 kids). I was greeted at the door by a hostess who spoke to us in a very rude tone, made it obvious she didn't want us or our stroller in her restaurant. Apparently, it was "dinner" time and she was expecting to get quit busy. So unless we were planning on having a "full" dinner, then there really wasn't room for us. Funny though, there were only 2 tables taken in the whole place. The moral of the story.....if you are a family living in the Annex, this is not a place to take them.

...lil critter ran right past me and into the kitchen. I though the restrooms smelt pretty bad too. Annex institution or not I think I'll be giving this place a skip until they give it an overhaul.

the food is just ok ... and really expensive for the quality, $18 for two Caesar salads! which tasted fishy anyway. poor value when you can go across the street to Thai basil and get more food for half the price, or over to Dooney's for a much tastier meal.

Maybe you could have asked for the dill sauce (with the calamari) instead of complaining afterward in your blog.
I'm sure the friendly wait staff would have been happy to provide.....

I read the review this morning and my friend and I decided to check it! I must say we had an excellent meal: we got French toast and the feta, mushroom and spinach omleate, and they were both delicious!
