Mark, where in my post did I say that the other ethnic food should be excluded?

If anything, I said that I supported the non-Greek food: "It seems like this festival is moving away from primarily Greek food to become a true multicultural festival, one that is very representative of Toronto."]]>

ToTD used to raise money for the hospital (TEGH) but that seems to have gone away. As I understand it if you are a BIA member you get a 10x10 spot, usually in front of your business but the places on Broadview and Pape like Magic Cardboard get to squeeze in on the street, it's the outside people who have to pay to play.

The weekend is usually a money looser for the restaurants (don't let the full tables fool you, you can't sell 18-25 dollar mains to people who've stuffed themselves on samples) and some of the businesses on the street (the guy from Sun Valley claims he looses a huge amount of money) and most of them don't even sell their own food, they use outside caterers. ]]>

Oh ffs. This is a massive event which costs quite a lot to organise. The beer festival in fort york had corp sponsors too. If you want a corporate free party, go to your local street party. If you don't have one in your neighbourhood, think about organising one.

As for the "non-greek food" - the ethnic diversity of Danforth is reality, why should the Brazilians and Indians and Thais be excluded?]]>

$10K for 10'by10'. Shit, just standing there, I took up a thousand bucks worth of space. So, if I wore a corporate t-shirt, I could've charged them a grand, even more because I would be moving around.
There is just no escape from the corporate/commercial/advertising behemoth.]]>

In fairness to Rogers, they do have a store (two, in fact: one wireless and one video) on the Danforth, and their tent was right in front of their store. In that sense, they were just another merchant on the strip and I don't begrudge them their spot. Can't say the same for most of the other booths down the middle of the street.]]>

Apparently ToTD charges $10k for a 10'x10' booth. So, imagine how much Fusion paid?!]]>

I totally understand the need for corporate sponsorship sometimes. There are many events that would not get off the ground if it wasn't for some company sticking their name on it and giving some money.
I don't care that it's called the "KRINOS Taste of the Danforth" and I don't care if the beer garden was brought to you by Steelback. I don't even mind seeing ads on things, if it helps pay for them.

What I don't get is why a booth selling cell phones is even at the event? Couldn't Rogers have stuck their name on a jumping castle or something and had some pamphlets available? At least their sponsorship would have done some good (providing a jumping castle) rather than just be an annoyance.]]>

I'm not a religious person, but to me, anything with a coporpate logo over it, is like signing a pact with Satan.
"Sure, we can do that, but what's in it for us?"
Maybe I'm naive, but wouldn't it be nice to just have something be for the sake of itself. Are there just not enough avenues for corporations to push their crap on us already? They have to take our festivals too? What won't they just leave alone.]]>

I don't understand why nnd how all the sponsors were there.
Did they rent sidewalk space from the city?
Can anyone just set up a tent and sell merchandize during the festival?
Did they donate money? (Doesn't seem necessary with all the traffic)

I think it's fine if something like face painting or a jungle gym is brought to you by a corporate sponsor because I appreciate them bringing enjoyment to the festival, but being stopped by a cell phone company just trying to sell me a phone while I'm making my way through the crowd is ridiculous.
I mean, I'm there to order food from local vendors not buy a cell phone. Are they kidding me?

Yeah, I'm not big on crowds and my friend warned me, but it wasn't too bad, I mean, things moved along ok.
Was hotterthanabastard though. But a patch of sunburn is a small price to pay for souvlaki: - )
And I finally got a chance to duck into Book City.]]>

I have NEVER seen the Friday night that packed. My wife had never been before, so I thought Friday night would be the best time to go, with the baby in the stroller, and my "I don't like huge crowds" wife on my arm. I figured it would be busy but...

OMG.]]>

Was a great day. I had some chicken souvlaki that was quite good, and some Spanakopita that was also yummy. Then, of course, a stop at Donlands' Greek bakery later for some baklava. The festival was great....that being said, I agree with the corporate presence being a little depressing (Yeah, why was Western Union there, "It's a festival, I'll NEVER be able to send money...wait, look, we're saved!!"). Whenever someone tries to hand me a corporate pamphlet or flyer, I tell them, "ya know, this is EXACTLY why I came to the festival". I guess the days where we could possibly just have a festival without corporate intrusion are long gone. No longer a gathering of people enjoying diverse cultures, music and food, merely potential customers taking the bait.
Fortunately, it was still a good time.]]>
