Great article Roger.? As usual California is leading the way by sourcing more sustainable materials, in this case to build better skate and snowboards.? It's amazing in this age of enviroclamour that there is such a disconnect between what people think they know is best (not cutting down old growth trees) and what they don't realize is wrong (cutting down old growth trees to make skateboards) because they don't ask, don't think about it, or live in a big city where anything and everything is accessible. If they don't see "it" (the cutting) happening they don't feel responsible. ?As the world becomes smaller (through travel and distribution channels) we seem to become less aware about where the things we buy and use come from. I'd love to throw in a "you might be a carnivor but you wouldn't kill a cow yourself" line here but that might just start another blog war - oh wait - that just happened.

If any of you care about the environment and skateboarding, perhaps we should be discussing what goes into the production of all those skateboards, as reported on?obviously.ca:

http://www.obviously.ca/article/the_world_after_wakestock_pt_2_skateboards/

I'd have taken a photo of this myself had I known about it at the time. Although I did hear the chainsaw over the annoying play-by-play coverage blasted through the loudspeakers by the?Pro Wakeskate Best Trick event I was shooting at the time. But I thought it was just one of those noisy motorcross bikes.

Jerrold - De La was responding to the noise of the chainsaw, then the sight of 2 large branches falling. You can see a portion of the cut limbs in the photo on TOist, on the left side. It was difficult to take photos of from where I was standing, but I do have some aftershots with the bikers jumping through, though it's hard to see because I was mostly panning.

And that's the last mention about this from me. I happened to enjoy Wakestock, chainsaws aside. :)

mike_G> I don't see a blogosphere war here, as two other blogs were linking to TorStar articles, which is what blogs often do -- and taking that article at the face value it should seem. Most of the rattle is coming from this writer who is passionate about Wakestock lifestyle, the hot ladies, and not letting chainsaws fly. Which is the way it goes.

But at any rate, you obviously don't believe what the kissinger said applies to blogs, since you thought enough to read and post.

We all heard the chainsaw, turned to the area behind the audience and watched a branch fall.? Nobody was pleased about it.? A?De La Soul MC shouted out, so did the crowd, but from what I can tell (and I was there during the whole set) it stopped there. I was pretty happy the crowd was a conscientious one and didn't let it fly.

No disrespect to the other blogs - I think they're great - but neither writer that I read reported first hand, and I was surprised at how much speculation it drew.

With all the fuss The Star, Torontoist, and Spacing made about the tree thing, I found it a little fishy that not one of them managed to snap a photo of said butchered tree. Glad to hear that it wasn't an international incident after all.

Way to be petty. A) it was more than one tree branch and b) even if it was only one, that's still not cool. That said, the incident shouldn't overshadow everything else that happened at Wakestock.
