just 1 comment you're being blindsided and tautological, hence the mow the grass comment isn't racist. Second you're being overtly nationalistic ind efending the toronto police to defend the honour of your own country, just out of what? patriotism?
third. There was an ault involved the coach of the chilean team who's an elderly man, he also got battered. There were brusies and tazer marks, perhaps you think this is tough love marks and nothing to be called battery. Apparently you expect a gunshot wound, hence what happened to the polish fellow at teh Vancouver airport?
Fourth these players were generally well behaved and not to be compared with other football hoolighans, as you can see that they had peformed very well and kept to themselves without a majour incident. You're just trying to make a case that soccer assoc football breeds savagery.
Fifth a responsible foreign diplomat official was on the scene as well as the national team coach
6th a google search constitues as popularity of a subject hence being complained about too many times to be discounted as a myth, which is why google features the feature to trace thepopularity of search results. which are especially useful for marketing.
7th despite what you think about south american soccer, the performance tehre is taken with pride at a juniour level because they're trying out for the adult league, one of the battered, Vial got hired by a german team, as Suazo got hired for the adultnational team, which wouldn't have happened if they were the irresponsible thugs that you said.
8th to the chileans that support the toronto police, you must love your jobs in canada too much and you must consider the players as subhuman, there's still a lot of social class struggle in Chile.
9th racism has been demonstrated in generalisations that saying that all chileans are :a, all south american football is b, based on a claim by witness c. Plus the pin the blame on the foreigner. A?slander raus?
10th however multicultural a city is , the population is considered endemic to the urban territory tehrefore culture in comparison to a foreign visiting socceer team. this in a society that uses F.O.B as a putdown.
Oh yeah let's all act like baby Bushes]]>

I know it will soon be a year since the Chilean and Argentinian game and "confrontation", but there are some stuff people really need to see. I couldn't read all the posts, because there were just too many, but I read some of the first ones. I agree with some peoples opinions and I disagree with some. I am a Canadian 16 year old with Chilean parents and I hold that Chilean heritage to me TOO close. I consider myself more Chilean than Canadian, but there are stuff I have to admit are just dumb, like how they say racism was a contribution to the police's actions. It would actually be quite disgraceful for Canada if it was due to racism because we are a multicultural country that promotes peace and dignity between each other. But, that's not the case. Now I totally agree with Jerrold when it comes to the whole thing about the referee handing out those cards like there was no tomorrow. The Chilean players got yellow and red cards for the stupidest reasons while the Argentians would do immense fouls and they would not get anything for it.
Regarding the brawl, I was in Chile when this whole thing went on and the impact it had on Chileans in Chile was incredible. They even went and threw stuff at the Canadian embassy in Santiago. My uncle was actually helping out reporting and he saw everything that happened with his own eyes. Toronto Police simply did a horrific job that night. In chile, the players were being interviewed as they got back and they say most of it started when some Chilean players went to their fans to sign autographs and security wasn't letting them, they would ask them why and because their English was/is not that good, some security thought they said something innapropriate to them and began taking unnecessary actions against them. Since when can police just use a taser or use weapons on someone if they THOUGHT they said an inappropriate word. Then people go on to say that the Chilean players were destroying the bus because you know they're Spanish and they want to go destroy something because they're SO mad?? the real reason was that a female cop actually through those bombs that burn your eyes into the bus and doors were closed. They hadto smash the windows to get out because the doors wouldn't reopen. So later they're seen as these players that can't take losing so they destroy stuff and cause havoc? That's completely wrong. Some people have their opinion and I do too, but I'm not saying it because I'm Chilean, I try to think of stuff logically, without being biased. If it was the Argentian team that lost and that happened, I would look at it the same way. Although I'd be happy to see that Chile won, it would be unfair to omit the idea that they're being unjustly treated, like the Chilean team was.
Unfortunately, thanks to this situation, we probably won't be seeing big tournaments like these occur in Toronto, which is a shame because it is incredible to see so many people rooting for their players and countries. But, if they do decide to do something here again, then they should really see who they're choosing to decide the fate of a country's team's destiny, and to have security or police use a better form of protection. The Chilean players were not going to do anything to harm the well-being of people and if they did, they know that would look bad on them especially if they're in a country that is not theirs.
toronto police really needs to settle themselves and arrest or hurt people that are armed and that are a real harm to the community not defenceless players that are here just to represent their country.]]>

I worked with the U20 FIFA in Ottawa and my friends in Toronto told me that before the fight started Toronto Police took all the Chilean Press and the others to a hall and locked them there. THATS WHY NO VIDEOS ONLINE NOW. Toronto Police covered there ass, I mean KIDS, UNARMED, STRESSED, come on police if u do that to a Canadian with the same age u will get fired because u abused and underage. Yes Toronto is diverse but the police is mainly WHITE PEOPLE, u can see some other races in the police but generally they are white, I mean I live in Ottawa and I have seen ONLY ONE NON-WHITE OFFICER he was ASIAN, so don't defend the police. and seriously every Toronto volunteer person who saw the incident(my friends) said that a guy left the bus to sign autograph for A CHILEAN GIRL FAN, and the police though something else and attacked, idiots. they need some major training, those are not criminals. In Vancouver they killed a traveler immigrant from East Europe with a TEASER in the airport, and now this happens in Toronto. THATS PROVE THAT CANADIAN POLICE IN GENERAL NEEDS SOME MAJOR WORK, follow Germany not the USA style of violence. ]]>

I have nothing to add to all this. I just wanted to say that the intervention of the police in a game is justifiable. Order must be established. However, I would like to see this type of intervention done in hockey arenas as well. Souldn't they intervene when hockey players are punching and clubbing each other (sometimes causing death)???? I think that every time this happens, those players should be arrested too.]]>

Firstly to the comments stating that Toronto police are racists and cowards : Since when is Chilean a race? and whats cowardly is an 18 year old man not "boy" striking a female officer and don't try to deny it, it was confirmed by both sides that it did happen including of the Chilean teammates.

Secondly, to those pointing out the fact that the Toronto police made a show of force: The whole purpose of police is to "enforce" compliance to the law and peace, "force" being the root of that word. Sure, police forces all over the world have the select few who choose to abuse their power however to state that Toronto police are any different is false.

Thirdly, those supporting Chile and condemming Toronto police as brutal are hypocrits. Take a look on the internet, there are literally dozens of videos depicting Chilean incidents with police involving brutality far surpassing some non-lethal tazers and hauling people away in handcuffs. Chilean police are feared by their own people, so don't get all offended when a foreign nation's officers do what is completely within their jurisdiction to attempt to dispell a situation. The outcome would have been the same if it had been the Canadian squad who started pushing female officers and busting out windows.

The only disgrace to this situation is that it had to come to world-wide attention.]]>
