So, I am not the only person to have a bad experience at the Freshwood Grill. Went there almost 3 years ago now and not been back. Check in every so often but don't see any changes. On that occation I ordered a steak medium. They used to be so good!! Came to the table rare - very, very rare, so I asked for it to go back on the grill for a bit. The cook, who was in the middle of cleaning the kitchen with powder detergent picked up my steak with his wet powdery fingers, threw it back on the grill, left the rest of my food on the counter getting cold and continued to clean with powder cleaner as my steak was on the grill! I was a little shocked to say the least. The sweet potatoe fries were burnt, soggy and greasy. I have not been back since. Nor did I eat that meal. And yes, the staff do feel they are special for some reason. A horrible experience all the way around, yet when they first opened the food was really good for a short while. Was there a change in ownership way back when or did they just go down hill really fast and stay down? ]]>

Roncey Rocks!....with a few exceptions.

BEST coffee joints - LIT Espresso Bar & Tinto.

BEST Indian Food - well, it's the only one, but it's equally awesome - Shalamar!

The new Bistro 299 - we agree, it's an excellent restaurant. It's really worth checking out. Will be nice to eat there when summer comes and their patio opens.

Kudos to the friendly staff at Brad's for the best weekend brunch in T.O.! Best eggs benny in town, bar none. And freshly squeezed OJ - can't beat that.

BEST Fruit & Veggie Markets - all of them!

Will someone PLEASE go into Freshwood Grill and tell them how to properly cook food? UGH! People, don't even bother wasting your time and money on this crappo restaurant. NEVER AGAIN will we eat there. They refurbished this joint - and it's still as awful as ever.

Sorry to see Bravo Gelato close, but, well, it WAS a gelato place, and we DO have rather long winters here...you do the math!

And, as a health nut, I LOVE Q Natural Foods at Roncy & High Park Blvd. Great selection and very well informed staff.

WE NEED AN LCBO!! NOT FAIR that Brock Ave (ugh!) has one, and we don't!

My girlfriend and I moved to Roncey last March, and we love it. Great selection of coffee shops, fruit markets, and restaurants, plus the awesome Revue Cinema. We love the fact that there are so many TTC routes accessed via Roncey to get downtown or anywhere for that matter.

Inter Steer: LOVE this place! Very cool, and great food and service.

Bistro 299: This was the old "Starpolska" restaurant, and good riddance to THAT dump. Check this new bistro out - very good food, nice atmosphere and good service!

DON'T bother with the "refurbished" Freshwood Grill! They may have prettied it up inside (to a degree) but the food there is as crap as it's always been.

LIT Espresso Bar makes amazing Italian coffee, and this is perhaps the one place on Roncey where you can get genuine, freshly baked croissants. Their muffin selection is awesome, too.

Speaking of treating their employees like crap, think twice before you head to Alternative Grounds for coffee. Their employees are treated like crap, too, and the owners are CHEAP AS HELL in regards to what they pay their staff. Ever wonder WHY Alternative Grounds is closed every public holiday? Because the owners refuse to pay the staff any amount over the measley wages they pay them.
Plus, the interior of this place is old and tired - enough of the "artsy grunge garage sale" look!

Thai Chef: Great food, but they need to spruce up the inside a bit.

Don't eat at the Butler's Pantry!
It looks like a pleasant little place and the food is decent, though the portions are a tad small, but I've heard nothing but horror stories from several past employees. They say the turn-over rate is ridiculous and I can believe it since it's always someone new in there and the help wanted sign seems to come up every few weeks.
The employees are poorly treated and I wouldn't want to support a business that has so many disgruntled staff members.]]>

My favourite shop on Roncey is Hawk Eyes. They always have amazing window displays but most of all, I love it when that little dog is in the window! It makes me smile. Out of their selection of great finds and knick knacks, I bought a beautiful glass decanter but they also have great pieces of furniture too. ]]>

You know what's annoying? How virtually all neighbourhoods have to get the "village" label slapped onto them. It's a neighbourhood in a large city, not a village. Is it really so bad to call it "Roncesvalles" instead of "Roncesvalles Village"? Ditto for Liberty, now Liberty Village. Please, no "Financial Village", "Jane-Finch Village", "Cityplace Village" or "Dundas West Village" ...

I also hope that any chains which set up shop and demolish the old three storey buildings for generic looking one storey corporate stores.

I've lived here my whole life..23 years and I have seen major changes occur all over the neighborhood. I've always loved it for being a family community where the people have a pretty good attitude towards one another. I find "neighborhood watch" to be particularly strong as there have been many occurrences of theft and vandalism..but lately it's subsided quite a bit. I find there to be so many trendy shops now- especially coffee shops and restaurants. One of the downsides though of this area is there tends to be a reoccurring trend of stores opening and closing within a few months and many people do not find an interest in making them prosper. I find it amazing that there are certain stores that never seem to be open yet they've been there for years and you never see anybody in them, but yet they stand day after day! (ie: fur stores and million year old tailoring shops). I also find the buildings to not be big enough to fit enough people inside (so you often have crammed restaurants for example.)
Overall it's a great place to live with many stores, shops, schools and parks and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else :) ]]>

Well, for my money, you can't beat Q Natural Foods on Ronces - by far one of the BEST natural health food/product stores in the city. Very clean, great selection and amazingly knowledgeable staff. I'm very impressed.

Ate at Krak the other night - very delicious - my friend and I were delightfully bloated!

LIT is a very good place - great espresso and Americano, plus their muffin selection (LOVE the carrot and almond!)
is top-notch.]]>

I second the motion on LIT espresso bar - great place with a very cosy design inside - awesome coffee.

By the way, my boyfriend and I ate at Abstract Tree the other week - don't bother - this place, which was once great when it opened, is so mediocre now in regards to food. Blah really sums it up.

Can't wait for Mabel's to open up soon! Her items selection looks like it's going to be amazing.

It would seem as though Freshwood Grill - the el-stinko/dumperoo of Ronces, seems to be getting an overhaul inside? About damn time. The big question is, is the crappo food going to get an overhaul, too?

Interesting comments here, especially about the 'Polish Festival' - sorry, George! :-)

I do have to say though, that as a long time Ronces resident, I avoid this God-awful bad annual Polkafest like the plague. My girlfriend and I always high-tail it out of the area the weekend this shing-dig is goin' on!

Yeah, the Ronces BIA really does need to sharpen up this festival. It could be so much better than it is.

Anywho....

Love the neighbourhood! Ronces really is an awesome place to reside. Tons of great restaurants, as mentioned above.

And, hey, we have the Revue!

Rock on, Ronces!]]>
