In Helvetica, I also noticed how pretty much every single designer we saw had a gleaming Mac on their desk, re-affirming its brand image as the "creative person's computer". Thing is, it really is the more widely used computing system for creative professionals. I don't know if you can really blame that pissed off German designer for having a stylish Mac - surely we can't expect him to build his own computer out of birch planks, hot-glued pipe cleaners, and Linux?]]>

I saw Helvetica yesterday too. Anyhoo... I agree with you that a whole movie about a font will/might/should run dry eventually -- perhaps the anticipation didn't help -- but I'm still somewhat blown away by the fact that something I've barely noticed has such a rich history and cultural impact. Of course it's as a beautiful as its subject, and I can't fault the film for not sticking to its purpose. Did you also find that so much of what is mentioned in the film, especially about the battle between modern clean versus subversive expression, seems to apply for art in general (as in movies, visual culture, etc)? Is that a stretch? Or is it really just about one thing -- the font?]]>
