Ok, I don't dine out too often, I mostly cook my own food and I'm a frequent visitor to Indian/Asian groceries. Some places look truly filthy and, frankly, repulsive. Fortunately, you can wash/ clean/peel/scrub/whatever your groceries and assure proper handling. However, there are some places that are really nice and clean and well supplied, too. ]]>

I rented two different houses in Kennsington in the past 10 years and the rodent problem in the whole neighborhood is just out of control. I'll probably keep going to Wanda's for her Key lime pie despite the irritable staff and rats. I got pretty used to finding them when I lived in Kennsington.

even old buildings it is not excuse to serve food with rodents, insects and roaches. if you have these have your premise treated regularly and have the place spotless clean. note that most of the tickets are not because of insects, but because of handwashing. i am sorry, but if you mix (contamination), leave it outside of the fridge then it's your own fault of getting these tickets. also, i think they announce their arrival. regarding the targeting of the immigrants or non-english establishments - not true - if you don't wash your hands while preparing food you get a ticket. besides most of the places have immigrant chefs or kitchen staff these days (even high end)... prepare your food at home people]]>

If you operate a food-based establishment, you're fighting a losing battle against pests. Like many have agreed on these pages before, Toronto buildings are often old and it's easy for pests to sneak in. I've worked in Kensington Market and I've worked in high-end places, and the owner/managers are always aware of the problem. The thing that's common that no one talks about are the number of ultra-fine restaurants in this town that keep "kitchen cats" who prowl around after dark to kill any interlopers. You never hear of these fine places having a problem - methinks kitchen cats are doing their job!]]>

The problem is as much not being able to receive food handler certificates/language barrier as it is health officials looking for foreigners to make their dirty restaurant quotas. There's a game that needs to be played and lots of immigrants can't play it because they don't know how. You see absolutely filthy restaurants with English-speaking proprietors pass all the time. Don't take too much away from DineSafe... it's as much about looking for something as it is noticing something. ]]>

I don't think I was in anyway dismissive, and in fact there is clearly a problem that should be solved and new solutions to be found. Sorry to look for solutions in a way that would help everyone. At this point demographically speaking we are a country of English, French and Chinese... perhaps we should adapt? There are of course many places that have problems but this seems far to consistent. How can things get better? Happy Year of the Snake to you and thanks for the unwarranted dismissive. ]]>

That went way over your head if what you got was that chinese people eat rats..
I didnt write it, so maybe this person meant to be offensive, but Im pretty sure its factual that yes, a lot of proper restaurant practices aren't known or even considered in china town & everywhere in the city. Not just a chinese restaurant thing, an everyone in the restaurant biz thing. this list doesnt even name any china town places so im confused why the reference was even made in the first place.

problems happen because the people managing the food on a daily basis, often dont have Proper food handling training. it could be because yes, maybe they are newly immigrated to canada, and working in the service industry back house because it makes the most sense. and maybe they dont understand english Thaaaat well. in any case, thats not the problem, the problem is not understanding proper food handling.

if suggesting food handling rules should be translated makes someone a moron, than okay, they're a moron in your eyes. but id say, its moronic to eat in these restaurants that clearly have a problem grasping proper cleanliness & practice, whether it be a language barrier or just simply bad direction.

It seems week after week there is always a huge proportion of Chinese restaurants, groceries and places near to Chinatown listed here... Why? There are older buildings with restaurants in them all over the city that don't seem to have issues to this degree. Is it a cultural thing or does Toronto Public Health need to have more Chinese speaking officers? Are the safe food handling courses run in Chinese, because if not maybe they should be as things are getting lost in translation? Let's hope there is a solution to be found, because it's a bit of a black eye and only feeds a stereotype that for some is rooted in bigotry. ]]>

Maybe it's just the juxtaposition, but somehow a place that sells pies and sweets and also has a rat infestation seems even grosser! I don't think I'll be going there again... ]]>

Ahh, the joys of being located so closely to Chinatown! I believe that Wanda's has reopened though, and that their main issue was that they had many traps that had been triggered, but no one had removed the dead rodents, whereas New Seaway had live fuckers roaming around the store.]]>
