I agree; why DON'T they move to an up and coming neighbourhood?
I go to Queen and John exclusively to visit Pages. I'd prefer a cooler locale.

Book City on Bloor has a nicer staff; I overheard a cute conversation between two of the guys on cash about how they have no game when it comes to flirting. They also have everything I never knew I wanted. ]]>

It's sad they have to be forced out by greedy landlords, but how can he not find another location in two years? Especially now, there seems to be so many empty storefronts and landlords should be more flexible. Check out Queen East or one of our other fine neighbourhoods. Get some pros looking rather than try to do it all yourself, if that's the case. Pick a neighborhood that isn't so cool, and contribute to it, like what happened to Ossington. People will follow.

Swipe moved into 401 Richmond, which I thought was a bad idea at the time 'cause there isn't exactly a lot of foot traffic by their front door, but it seems to be doing well.]]>

I'm with you and That Guy

When I took a copy of my self published book in, the staff was rude and dismissive, then they put the book on the shelf and sold it, and I made nothing.

Never shopped there since.]]>

I don't get it: what's so special about this place, besides the fact that it is independent and in a good location. The reason it's closing is that cheapskate hipsters just go there to chat up the snooty book girls, but don't buy anything.]]>

When it was the artistic community, the Queen West ecosystem had a number of unique stores that collectively made it a destination. Pages was one of the "anchors" which made it worth my while to go there. One by one these stores are disappearing, and given the outrageous rent and taxes, I'm not surprised. It is bad news for every business on that strip.

One might hope that the unique combination of stores might be recreated somewhere else in the city. Opportunity?]]>

"Sometimes I really think this city has completely lost the plot."

I think that is bang on. Gone are the houses, buildings and stores that have individuality and character. 10 to 1 there is a Hollister in there by the end of the year. So depressed. I don't know anywhere else I would rather buy a book but I guess I was one of the few who still bought books there.]]>

It was inevitable that this store would close, but the spirit of Pages will live on whenever and wherever Mr. Glassman opens a new space. Kindles and e-books will never look, feel, or smell like printed paper, and another 30 years from now we'll still have a need for stores like Pages. We just won't find it at Queen and John.]]>
