Great post.

Seoul-kwan is the restaurant with the blue signs, right? I work in that plaza...
They seem to change management/wait staff every month. Great food though.]]>

Even Yonge/Finch is growing a bit stale - a lot of the establishments are moving north.

Two of the best Korean BBQ/kalbi places in Toronto are north of Steeles: Seoul-kwan in the same plaza as the Swiss Chalet, and Sariwon up at Clark. Chosun-ok right by Sariwon has some of the best naengmyun in the city, just in time for summer.

As for Roh Moo Hyun, RIP, indeed. However, I believe Koreans, when eulogizing him, should be careful to separate the man, a self made success story who battled for democracy in Korea, from his (mostly failed) policies as president - especially, to stay current with the title of the blog posting, his "North Korea" policy. A complete, utter failure - ever since Roh came into power, we've had two ICBM tests, two nuclear tests, hundreds of thousands of refugees flooding into China and being summarily repatriated back to North Korea, and a continuation of a political prison camp system that would make Josef Goebbels shed a tear of inspiration. In the end, Roh failed not only the 45 million who live south of the DMZ, but perhaps more importantly, the 23 million who live north of it.]]>

I was at the Yonge and Eg HMV and asked a sales person where the nearest Foot Locker was. She pointed me in the wrong direction (south) and said it was a 10 minute walk. I walked to Yonge and Dundas. Good times.]]>

On a lark, I once walked down Yonge from Sheppard to Front. The stretch from Sheppard to York Mills is the least exciting part of the trip, but the ravine that borders the street there is nice, and there is this pathway near Yonge/York Mils that is grown over, kinda hidden, and very pretty. On the whole, walking down Yonge isn't that hard; once you get to Yonge and Eglington, it's all downhill.]]>

Some Korean restaurants recycle leftover!!! Yak Yak Yak

It was on the news in Korea! caught on camera!

We all know Korean restaurants give free condiments (called Banchan in Korean)

They recycle the condiments, specially KIMCHI because it's hard to make, time consuming and expensive.

They'll either re-use as is or make Kimchi stew(any kimchi dishes)

I still go to Korean restaurants once in a while(FYI I'm KOREAN) but I mix all the leftovers and pour water, soy sauce, salt, vinegar whatever it's available or don't eat the condiments.

I just wanted to share this info. Thx

Yeah, not much to see between Yonge/Shepp and Yonge/York Mills. I've walked from York's Glendon Campus at Bayview and Lawrence to Yonge and Sheppard... a whole lot of nothing for half the walk.

"North Korea" is certainly a great place. It's been expanding right up to Steeles with it's Seoul Plaza (think Hell's Chicken). Strange area, really. Every store is either Korean or Persian.]]>

I live at the south end of North Korea, i.e. Yonge and Sheppard, and I hear you can catch a free shuttle to Galleria from here. I've never specifically seen it, but it seems like a great idea for seniors in the neighbourhood.

But Kenny, walking downtown from Yonge/Finch? Yikes. That's a huge dead zone between Sheppard and Yonge Blvd. and who wants to walk under 401?]]>

Move over Galleria, H-Mart is boss north of Steeles.

My friend that lives in Richmond Hill had been raving about H-Mart ever since it opened. She warned me that I'd be shocked because it was the cleanist and quietest Asian supermarket ever. Compared to T&T and the older Chinese supermarkets in Markham, it was almost dead silent! The pace of the entire place was much slower, the cashiers reminded me of my friend's cute korean mother's and everyone was so polite. Definitely recommend it. Then we had delicious food in the food court. ]]>

"walking into an "ethnic" restaurant and being the only non-whatever there is a sure sign of good food. "

Not at all. Been to plenty of ethnic restaurants where I was the only white guy and the food sucked (or the place was very dirty). It only means that they are not advertising to the wider audience because they don't care about the wider audience. And sometimes as well it means that their food standards are lacking.]]>

I think most Korean young people have been to DVD room at least one time, and I used to go to PC room several time only when my laptop is broken down...

Just as I'd rather go to Markham than Chinatown downtown for Chinese food and stores, Yonge & Eg/Finch is the place to go for Korean stuff, rarely do I walk along Bloor/Christie anymore.

What's even better is the fact that I can end up downtown from North Korea town easily anyway! I just walk straight south along Yonge St (or subway) so it's a win-win situation.

BTW, here's a very good and humourous video diary of a journalistic visit to the actual North Korea:
