Definitely know what you mean about being edgy. I've always found that the best way to combat it is through levity. =)]]>

Yeah, I knew I was taking that too seriously - it's just that those cuts to cultural funding that Harper made have me feeling a bit edgy lately re: matters of culture and money. To think he might get a majority gives me the chills.]]>

Definitely just a tongue-in-cheek joke from a bunch of guys that gamble on everything from sports to reality TV. In no way do we want to make TIFF a real competition. As you said, one of the best parts of TIFF is that it's not a juried festival like Cannes or Venice.]]>

I know (or hope) that you and your friend at the CFC BBQ were just joking, but you make the same mistake the Harper gov't makes - you think culture is all about a monetary return on investment. It ain't.

One thing I really like about TIFF is there's hardly any awards given out. It's all about celebrating the medium of film in all its rich variety, as opposed to a festival like Cannes which is quite restrictive as to the types of films it lets in and then finishes with a bogus awards ceremony that only reflects the tastes of whoever happens to make up the jury that year.

Filmmaking is not a contest. What appeals to one person won't appeal to everyone and box office returns and distribution deals certainly don't prove a thing. That, to me, is what makes art so much more interesting than sport - who cares that one guy can run faster than another guy?

As for the Paris Hilton doc, her involvement with it obviously means it's not going to be a very truthful film, but is more likely some kind of ego-driven infomercial for herself.]]>
