It sounds like a great start to making things better but it will def. be a while before this process is streamlined and actually working in the direct it is intended for.]]>

The city's pickup of bulk items is pretty broken: hard to say if it is pure incompetence or the result of lazy workers. Maybe they should work on fixing this before introducing yet another program.

To get rid of a bulky item like an old appliance you can't just leave it out on your garbage day. You have to phone a week in advance to get bulk items picked up. After you've gone to that trouble the item usually isn't picked up and you have to phone again and again to the city's broken phone system. After a month of trying to get the city to pick up an old dishwasher that sat on the curb the whole time. I wound up driving it to the waste transfer station myself. I've had several people tell me about similar experiences.

It it not surprising you see so much illegal garbage dumping around the city. The city doesn't provide the service they claim to.]]>

So according to a story I recently say on CTV, anything put to the curb is technically 'city property' if it's in a blue box. Thus, people who pick through recycling for beer/liquor bottles can be charged with something akin to 'theft' of city revenue. So I wonder if large items left curbside are considered litter? City property? Is there a way for the city to redistribute/generate revenue from these items? hmm.]]>

Honestly, if you get any foot traffic on your block, and if it's not a rainy day, and if the item isn't completely broken or worthless, you can put nearly ANYTHING out on your curb with a sign taped to it saying "Free [thing] - please take me" and it'll be gone within an hour. During the day obviously, not at night.

Not too long ago, I put out four chairs (two sets of 2), two lamps, a set of TV tables, and one or two other things. Everything went except for half of one of the lamps, which ended up in the trash pickup the next day. Yes, someone does want your random crap.]]>

It doesn't matter if the levy is on manufacturers or consumers.....it will just be a tax on consumers in the end because manufacturers will just pass on the cost. Or did you think that they would let it eat into their profit?]]>

For sure, I second the craigslist part.. A few years back I posted an ugly old junked entertainment stand with a picture, and within 24 hours I had about 30 responses from people offering to come pick it up.]]>
