It's the Federal Government that controls competition or lack of competition in our comunication industry. I today the lack of competition in Canada allows the few carriers we have to reap, should I say gouge, high profits at our expense. There are answers; allow international carriers to enter the canadian market, or send a message by not getting an I-Phone, who knows Apple Corp may have something to say to Rogers about that.]]>

i'm on a blackberry plan through my employer, and having mobile web browsing and email is very convenient and addictive. i would classify myself as an internet addict, and gadget freak, but no matter how you slice it, mobile web browsing is always going to be a novelty. no one NEEDS mobile web browsing. i can see email being a necessity since it can replace voice mail and text messaging, but to pay over $60 a month for web browsing is absurd.

i think rogers' pricing scheme will be a failure because, contrary to the blackberry, i don't see a lot of companies subscribing to iphone plans for their employees. i predict rogers readjusting their prices once the demand becomes evident. they obviously had to start very high to make future price drops seem consumer-friendly.]]>

Ben, the point is that the iPhone would be meeting people's needs (they're called wants, really) but Rogers is not. I would never bother with a current gen smartphone whereas I would get a lot of use out of an iPhone. It's silly to disregard all discussion of Apple products as either 'fanboyism' or baseless hating, the Apple products that suck, I don't buy or even care to use... the majority of Apple's history has consisted of products I did not like. This one isn't one of those.

RuinediPhone is currently down and rumours are going around that Rogers is deliberately blocking access to the site.

This would be a disturbing [although unsurprising] response from Rogers if this is indeed the situation:

People, all Apple fanboyism aside, the iPhone is nothing more than a tool to communicate wirelessly. If Rogers is not going to meet your needs with this tool, then find another one.

Telus offers unlimited internet for $45 on top of a $30 plan ($75 minimum) on all their smartphones (http://telusmobility.ca/on/plans/pcs/email_all.shtml).

Bell and carriers that use its network (PC Mobile, Solo, Virgin, etc) offer unlimited internet on all their regular phones for $7. Even better, they have classified its HTC Touch as a regular phone, so you can get unlimited internet on it for $7 (source: www.howardforums.com).

Bottom line: If the iPhone is not going to meet your needs, go elsewhere.]]>

Firstly, I cannot understand why text messaging is being limited, while visual voicemail (which to me requires far more bandwidth, etc...) is unlimited (unless Rogers is counting it against your total MB purchased for the month, which wouldn't surprise me).
As for competition... Only reason I feel, that Rogers and Bel devoured the former CityTV empire was to ensure that the 700 mHz being offered for sale this didn't go to anyone other than themselves.
What happened to the anti-monopoly laws we as a nation once had to protect the consumer.
Disgusting!!
Nana, I hope Rogers doesn't bring you back in their next ad campaign. You're too good for them!]]>

Not sure what Feldwebel Whatsit is going on about there, the pricing of the iPhone was actually unexpectedly good I thought, and it's a real shame Rogers is being so ass backwards as to screw the whole country out of what was looking like it was going to be an alright deal with significant tech advance implications.

No one but corporate clients are gonna be able to use these phones seriously.]]>

Rogers is still gonna make a lotta $ from the iPhone... only cuz there are so many stupid people who are willing to pay these prices just to say they have the new iPhone 3G.

I'll stick with my jailbroken 1st gen iPhone thanks (or until the 3G is unlocked/jailbroken).]]>

Such a disappointment. We need to visit a Rogers store and bend over because they really are screwing with us.

I really hate my current phone and I was waiting for the iPhone to come to Canada to make a phone switch. But compared to a similar phone plan with the one I have now I'm looking at three times the cost on a monthly basis. Luckily for me I recently finish my contract with Rogers and I have the option of switching phone carriers without any penalties.

To be honest I hope this does affect Apple's bottom line.]]>

Also, tying more data to more minutes may "justify" the scale a little more but that's another deterrent. I'd use gigs of data, but would have no use whatsoever for 800 minutes for weekdays (on top of unlimited evening and weekend!).]]>
