Slim Twig and a Sweaty Crowd

<a href="http://www.myspace.com/slimtwig"taRGET=_BLANK>Slim Twig has been in the spotlight in the Toronto music scene for quite a while, long before Now Magazine <a href="http://www.nowtoronto.com/guides/readerspoll/2008/story.cfm?content=165753"taRGET=_BLANK>crowned him the best pop/rock artist last year. I've never gotten the chance to see him live, so naturally I wanted to see what the big fuss was about. Last night, the Horseshoe granted me this desire as they held a CD release party for his latest album Contempt!

Wavelength Travels Back to the 90s

<a href="http://www.sneaky-dees.com/"target=_blank>Sneaky Dee's stage was a wreck by the time their "Remember Toronto II: Bands Reunited" Wavelength edition ended. The event featured Grasshopper, The Electric Shoes, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/officialkatrocket"target=_blank>Kat Rocket and Tigerbomb.

I'm not going to lie and tell you that I've been a fan of these Indie bands since the 90s, because the truth is during that time I was way too into mainstream radio to even know about decent underground acts. So I attended Sneaky Dee's as a total newcomer to what seems to have been a show full of nostalgia.

I guess you can't really expect a packed event on a weeknight, but that wasn't the only thing causing an absence of a crowd at the venue.

When I heard that Rich Girl were on the bill, I assumed that it would be an electro-punk themed kind of event, but I was mistaken. I knew it was a Wavelength night but I had no idea who the bands were or what genre I'd be listening to. I didn't mind though, because these are some of my favourite situations; seeing a band live before hearing their recorded material. By the end of the showcase, I'd experienced a really interesting and unpredictable show...

Metric Turn Into Rock Stars

I'd been waiting for them to play the Mod Club since they exploded with 'Live it Out', so I was extremely excited about their performance on April 14th.

What had stayed the same and what had changed since their first Mod Club appearance? Sure Emily Haines might sport blonde hair now, but other than their appearance, something else has changed - the crowd.

A showcase with two other psychedelic rock bands - Place Hands and Into the Other; Brides still managed to take the medal.
The Darcys Play a Sauna

Maybe it was because they hosted the event themselves, or because their live performances are so tight, but Thursday night the Darcys conquered the Whippersnapper Gallery. I got to the place a little late - so I (unfortunately) missed three other band's sets. I was actually there to see a Toronto favourite, Black Hat Brigade. When I discovered I'd missed their set, I was on the verge of leaving. But when I heard the Darcys playing from outside of the gallery, I decided to stay and support the melting sauna that the Whippersnapper had become.
