Ultra by Christopher Bates Arrives at Gotstyle

"He can't be serious about the Eurotrash thing," I said to Carolyn.

She had invited me to Gotstyle for the Ultra by Christopher Bates menswear launch party. Christopher is apparently really into the Eurotrash look; the logo is a trashcan with the Euro symbol on it. I was repulsed but intrigued. I had to see what this guy had to offer.

Christopher is from Vancouver. He started out in advertising then decided to pursue his dream of fashion design. His bio is impressive - he studied at Istituto Marangoni in Italy for fashion design and graduated with honours. The school boasts of graduates like Domenico Dolce of Dolce and Gabbana, Maurizio Pecoraro and Alessandra Facchinetti, ex-Valentino designers.

The Mother of all Boxing Day Sales Post

Boxing Day is always busy at my personal blog I want - I got. This year I decided to email as many stores as I could find about their boxing day sales. This list is a result of that work. I thought I would share this list with the blogTO community as some of you might not visit I want - I got on a regular basis.

Some sales continue past Boxing Day and others don't, they are noted. If the store has unusual hours they will be included, otherwise assume regular store hours.

Great ready for the list in no particular order. Happy Shopping

EDIT: There was a suggestion for a Google Map mashup and amazingly my friends at HyperGraphik Design created one for me.

Fashion sCares: The Costume Report

Fashion Cares made its return to the convention center with the 22nd installment called "Fashion sCares". It was a costume ball and I was dying to see what people came up with.

I decided to play up the fashion angle; my costume was Grace Jones at the Q Awards this year. I had a lot of help with the mask from Danielle at Final Fashion. My makeup was done by Gail McInnes who did her research to get the look just right. I also have to thank I Miss You vintage. The woman who helped me find the perfect outfit was amazing. It's a shame that good service is rare in this city. The final product was pretty accurate I think.

We made our way down into the convention center and were greeted by the frenzy of the media wall and ice skating ghouls. The majority of the attendees didn't dress up in costume. They dressed black tie, but really didn't try to get into the spirit of the event. There were enough in costume to make it interesting though. I was a little surprised to see Mr. Fashion Cares aka Michael King not in costume.

L'Oreal Fashion Week: Spring 2009 Collections - Day 4

"How did you like it?" she asked. "I'm not a fan, to be completely honest," I replied. "I figured as much from your expression," she laughed. I guess my growing confusion as the collection progressed was evident from the look on my face.

L'Oreal Fashion Week: Spring 2009 Collection - Day 1

Greta Constantine unofficially kicked off L'Oreal Fashion Week last week with their Spring 2009 runway show held at Circa. The show was a hot ticket and it brought out celebrities and designers like Chris Bosh, Natalie Brown, Wayne Clark and Fritz Helder and the Phantoms. The runway and stage were mirrored and the thought of models having to navigate that slippery, nerve racking runway crossed my mind.

It's the first Friday of my vacation and I'm sitting in the Fashion Television headquarters for a press conference by LG Canada. I was under the assumption that it was a preview of their new line of fashionably designed phones; I was wrong. It seems LG Canada has decided that they are going to jump into the Canadian Fashion scene with some major sponsorship money in order to "enhance and their support and elevate Canada's fashion industry to new levels". Their targets are L'Oreal Fashion Week (LFW) and Fashion Cares.

A behind-the-scenes look the gifting lounges at TIFF

We have all heard about these mysterious lounges that pop up during film festivals where celebrities walk in and then walk out with armfuls of free stuff. This year I was able to get a first hand look at what the public doesn't get to see. I received an invite to the Tastemakers Lounge.

It was started in 2005 and it's a product placement company which specializes in gifting lounges and swag bags. Other events they do include the Genies, Gemini Awards and corporate funding events.

I walked up to the Intercontinental and there was a crowd of people standing around, cameras in hand. The celebrity stalkers and paparazzi, I thought to myself - how annoying. I don't understand why anyone not getting paid would hang outside this hotel for hours on end, just to get a glimpse of someone famous.

Do you want to be part of the Art of Fashion?

Art of Fashion is a non-profit organization that supports and raises funds for emerging Canadian apparel and accessory designers by creating a platform for exposure. Every year, they hold a design and exhibit competition to further their cause.

The theme of this year's competition is Between the Lines, and is described as: "the divide between good and evil, black and white, heaven and hell, dusk and dawn, or even an everyday juxtaposition. It is an exploration that unites cultural, historical, and community boundaries. It is the elements that have helped shape one's own life and the way it ties lives together, bringing life from the past, to the present and into the future. Combining fashion with art gives you, the designer, the chance to create a personal realm that tells your tale and communicates it back to the public. You will be required to explore what lies between your own lines, and bring your personal expression to life through your themed collection and presentation."

Seduction at the Carlu

I broke an unspoken rule I had with myself - I don't do fashion shows related to undergarments.

Most shows end up being hosted in a club, where I can view the best in Playboy underwear, with models on risers (and way too much to be seen). This is great if you are a guy or a lesbian, but I'm usually just interested in the clothes when it comes down to it. The models are just hangers and I don't want to be distracted by their crotches. Note: Ginch Gonch is an exception, because, well, there are hot men in their shows.
