Philip Sparks fall/winter 2010 collection sets sail

Posted by Briony / March 13, 2010

Philip Sparks fall 2010Philip Sparks' fall/winter presentation was the unofficial kick-off to this month's many stylish soirees, culminating in the spring edition of Fashion Week come the end of March.

Sparks eschewed the traditional runway in favour of a small tableaux of about a dozen looks. Sparks -- always a fan of the woolly, the rough-hewn, the clothes tailor-made for a sail around Nantucket on a brisk fall day -- took Moby Dick as his inspiration this season.

His first model hoisted a coil of thick rope upon his shoulder, while others posed among nautical debris.

The collection, appropriately, featured a lot of navy (including a lovely peacoat with generous, rounded lapels) and sensible black wool (from sailor-style peacoats to zippered motorcycle-inspired jackets).

If only I were a man -- I'd love to set sail with Sparks' style.

I attended the show and thought that while the collection was well-made and visually appealing (and I really loved the runway/presentation idea) there was something stale/safe about it. A lot of what Philip showed has been done in seasons past and I didn't feel/experience the 'newness' that his last collection evoked.

That being said I did like the pea coat with the caped back and the bags were very covetable.

And I think he got his references mixed up. While there was the nautical about the collection it was more Oliver Twist than Moby Dick.

"You may be able to pose me, but you can't stage my heart!" LOL
