Adrian is my favourite. I really like his outfit. It shows creativity and style. It's very difficult to find street style especially during a Canadian winter and I think Theo did a good job.

Maybe I'm too rigid and this "rule" doesn't apply anymore, but almost everyone here seems to be mixing brown and black...or colours that would work better with either but not both. For me, when putting together an outfit, this is the primary decision. Now, I don't mean just brown and black, but for example...

Adrian: outfit would be SO much nicer if those boots were brown
Allison: no comment. I've seen hobos with more style. Kurt called; he wants his one-stars back
Maria: just all over the place. Jacket does not work. Scarf does not work.
Unique: hat purple and jacket pink? really?

In any case...I have to question the fashion sense of the writer himself who is so easily fooled by seemingly fashion-forward people who really just throw any old shit together

Aghhhh… Eaton Centre… I used to work there through college and then university… BTW, my TEC style icons-Club Monaco employees, You just can’t be dressed badly working there… But back to the post.
I like Dalia-so much color, beautiful hair, great smile. I though Adrian was a girl.
Nao and Kris-or so average
Allison-don’t get me started. You know, the main reason there are so many unhappy single women in Canada is feminism. Men are scared of women, they don’t want to be gentleman anymore. They don’t open doors, offer to carry bags, or vacate sits on the subway. And women-well, let’s just say they are dedicating too much time to “equality”, and not enough time to personal grooming. Get a manicure, waxing and get laid!!!
Maria-made me smile. I have a whole bunch of scarves like that from my babushka. They are really warm and beautiful, but not for outside. I just wear them at home as a shawl when I am cold.
Aprile looks good. Preloved makes great things!
Unique-will not comment
Kristina-very nice, but the outfit is asking for a different bag.
Leah-thumbs up for creativity, smile, and a skirt in winter. Just one thing-go for real leather. “Pleather” is for couches in doctor’s offices.

Sorry, I was a bit bitter today.

I'm not saying the scarf is bad

But a scarf which is black, blue, red, and purple with a tad of green has no business on a brown jacket (which has no business being worn with a black and white outfit).

Such a mess!

Hee, how cute that TOGirl would prefer to have men open doors for her than to have social, economic, and political equality. What happens when one inches over age 30 or 100 pounds (whichever comes first) and finds her elaborate beauty rituals no longer matter in a culture that considers women useless if they are not young eye-candy? Enjoy that. I'll gladly take the equality that she doesn't want over shallow objectification.

And yay to Leah for refusing to wear leather! Nothing's more beautiful than compassion, and nothing's more ugly than supporting others' deaths for one's own vanity.

These folks certainly look better than the Yorkdalians of the previous Street Style, and better epitomize Toronto fashion, I think.

Wow, good to know that women MUST spend time on "keeping up appearances" rather than fighting for equality..for ALL. And btw, that's what feminism has evolved into..not just fighting for women's equality but for all minority groups as well. And dispelling gender myths on BOTH sides.

The amount of stereotypes on this board about feminists is astounding. Feminism is complex; there are conservative feminists and socialist feminists. I hope everyone will at least read the wiki on feminism and feminist theory and realize that it's not some simple concept.

this is probably the best batch out of all the street style posts so far, they are def improving (less tights as pants and un inspiring styles). Toronto has a hard time having style. People seem lost between consumerism and budget store "trends" and picking up other peoples trash and calling it vintage. Layers or simplicity, textures, details, etc there is a method to the madness, and Toronto seems to be trying and failing. There's a reason we're not a fashion city(even if we try to wing it and fake it). A beautiful picture, the art of dressing up, it's a well thought out process for most people in Europe. A great sense of style should be inspiring and curious.

Yeah! Our culture hates women over 30 and considers them useless - like Hilary Clinton, Susan Sarandon, Madonna, Oprah, Annie Leibowitz, The Queen, Angelina Jolie just to name a few of the more notably disregarded females in our society you might know.

Take your femi-nazi rage and channel it into making an informed opinion.

Alogon In replying to a comment from lily / January 12, 2010 at 1:57 PM
user-pic

Both sides? Really? Then why not call it humanism? I'll tell you why, because it's concerned with female rights and female legal protection.

And since you admonished us to read the wiki on feminism I will quote it to show you haven't - "The term feminism can be used to describe a political, cultural or economic movement aimed at establishing equal rights and legal protection for women. Feminism involves political, cultural and sociological theories, as well as philosophies concerned with issues of gender difference. It is also a movement that advocates gender equality for women and campaigns for women's rights and interests."

Madonna and Angelina Jolie?
They simply do what they do (whatever that is) because they are media who*es, who need the spotlight shining on them.
Not because they have any moral conscience.

M. In replying to a comment from Alogon / January 12, 2010 at 2:07 PM

No, it's because humanism is already something else. Also, your quote indicates feminism CAN be used to describe blah blah blah, but the article goes on to explain that lens is extremely useful for studying power relations and the politics of identity, etc. Essentially, at this point -- despite what the internet may or may not say in one article -- it is more of an outdated term for something that deals with enfranchisement and who is excluded from what, etc.

Alogon In replying to a comment from lily / January 12, 2010 at 2:07 PM

I just mentioned commonly known people to counter the accusation that society considers women over 30 useless.
Madonna is a powerful woman as is Jolie. Jolie does a lot of humanitarian work, no? Who are you to say she has no moral conscience? Do you know her? What exactly are you doing that compares?

The Queen is also a powerful woman.

The point is, society doesn't consider them useless because they are over 30.

Geez, reading comprehension isn't your bag, huh?

lily In replying to a comment from Alogon / January 12, 2010 at 2:16 PM

Maybe you should read the entire piece instead of just the first line? You'll see that there are feminists who argue for a wider definition and that the movement's also concerned with classism, racism, heterosexism, and so on. Feminists are concerned with gender equality, which includes fighting gender stereotypes. For example, about gay men because it involves assumptions about how women should act AND how men should act.

Alogon In replying to a comment from lily / January 12, 2010 at 2:17 PM
user-pic

Not to argue but I know what humanism is, the term was just to illustrate a point.

I just quoted the wiki because the other poster pointed us to it to dispel our "stereotypes".

My point is, why call it by a name that makes it seem more narrow than it, supposedly, is? The term may be outdated but, from what I have seen in all areas, feminism seems to be concerned with female enfranchisement and equality. Just because some women are from another ethnicity doesn't mean that feminism's scope extends beyond women to consider questions of so-called "racial" prejudice.

Maybe I am just uninformed about this "new" feminism, maybe if you had an example I could see.

I should say: gender equality can't happen without other forms of equality happening too. That's the point...that they're all connected. That's why it's important to fight for other rights too.

"Just because some women are from another ethnicity doesn't mean that feminism's scope extends beyond women to consider questions of so-called "racial" prejudice."

That's actually one of the main criticisms about western feminism that started in the 80s. That's why there's now "Black feminism" and "Third World feminism." Many Black feminists separated from the mainstream fem movement because of issues like rape for eg. When Anita Hill accused Clarence Thompson of raping her, western fems automatically assumed that all women should support Anita. But many Black fems were wary about doing so, because of the history of demonizing Black men as rapists.

M. In replying to a comment from Alogon / January 12, 2010 at 3:11 PM

Sorry about being a bit snippy myself!

I think the reason it's still called 'feminism' is because people like to have an easy target (and hate to change their habits); if it were called something that encompassed equality for all, it would be much harder to deride publically like people have started to do here. It is also lazy to trot out these tropes about feminists, even if they're only concerned with women's equality -- such as the ones TOGirl mentions in her first post, about being man-frightening bitches whose not being waxed tip to toes means they are ungrateful and undesired.

I think the best example of a broader scope might come from the so-called Marxist feminists, who regard gender -- among most other things like race, socioeconomic status, etc. -- as a class like any other, thus a determining feature in the power and social relations into which someone can successfully enter. Of course, most argue from the point of view of women's oppression, being what is most local (ie., relevant) to them, but I always got hints of these overarching themes when studying them in school. There are others like Judith Butler or Monique Wittig who focus on issues of how we navigate our bodies and our roles, while having to use loaded and oppositional tools (like language) to help us. I'm at work and my old books and readings are at home, but if you actually want other names then I can forward them at a later time.

Failing that, suffice it to say they are out there and wish along with yourself, or myself, that we could stop using such a terrible term as 'feminism' for something that can be so inclusive. 'Identity politics' might be useful and is used occasionally, but I think mostly in formal academia.

Adrian, i don't think people even notice your boots, i was just mersmerized by your resemblance to Arare..I thought you copied her outfit from the anime series... as for the plaid boots, they will be covered by snow and sludge eventually..nobdoy can tell it's a designer item...

Well sorry buddy but the guy asked to take my photo for a reason. Your opinion doesn't matter at all. I have people from Tokyo and Milan showing me love. End of story.

unbelievable that this is what T.O blogs are all about. this thing is about 'street style' and it's 90 plus comments of just pure hate. ridiculous if it wasn't sad.

if you think you're such hot shit, then please (and I do mean please with shoogs on top) please beg a blogto photog to take your pic so we can cause a ruckus round here. (with your comments attached)

I just really hope that some massive investor planning to open a series of really successful businesses in Toronto doesn't change his mind after seeing our beautiful people.

Mr. Rich Man, this post isn't indicative of all Torontonians. We're not all douchebags.

You're right, people probably shouldn't be so mean, but to be fair the majority of these people really do look terrible. I'm honestly not saying that to be rude I'm just being, well, honest.

Okay maybe 'terrible' is a bit harsh, but it's because I also have the Sartorialist bookmarked along with BlogTO and the contrast is huge, obviously.

Hey, shopsterium. Always nice to see a fellow style blogger contributing to the discussion. Your comments have always been of value. What happened? Much of what you've written here wasn't put very tactfully.

These street style profiles get REALLY good when those who get photographed and criticized reply to the blog. IE: Adrian "gaysian" "bitches" "Burberry" Wu, loved it! lol

It's sort of entertaining watching people try to defend crimes that they're clearly guilty of, like OJ.

WOW!! I didn't realize that "RANTS and RAVES" had moved from Craigslist.

Get a grip people, it's only fashion.

Wow...I thought I was negative but you sure take the cake Rob.
I'd love to see your blog or some sort of creative output so I can rip it a new one too.
Fashion is subjective, that's why everyone's is different. Get a clue.

Sorry AVR, but when you publish something creative you open yourself up for public judgment. That's the way it works.

Saying fashion is subjective is a lowest-common-denominator pseudo-intellectual statement. I suppose you also consider Beethoven and Lil Wayne to be musical equals since like fashion or art, music is subjective? There is a reason why certain tried and true rules exist, even in fashion, but then again, you don't exactly need to be a subject matter expert to publish articles on BlogTo, do you? If Theo R attempted to publish this as a piece on fashion forward people in, say, GQ, he would get laughed out of the building.

You tit.
