Toronto T-Shirts - Looking for Inspiration Beyond the Needle

Posted by Tim / October 7, 2008

Toronto t-shirtsIs it just me or have a number of designers emerged recently hawking Toronto themed t-shirts? The aptly named T-Dot Clothing is one such entrant that's riding this wave, selling $35 tees like the above on their web site.

Unfortunately, like the Toronto t-shirts on sale at Urban Outfitters, I find many include cliched CN Tower-themed images . I'd love to see some more creative thinking and inspiration drawn from life beyond a Toronto Tourism marketing brochure.

Yasmine Louis makes some more creative Toronto-themed T-shirts: http://www.yasminelouis.com/shirts.htm

I've always liked the TO brand, they're pretty old and no CN tower imagery.

I have to say this T-Dot clothing line is pretty weak. The logo they came up with is horrid, I'm sorry to say. I'm not a designer in anyway but I wouldn't rock any of their t's. And for 35$ i'd rather spend that on 2 plain t's from the GAP. You'd think that someone in Toronto would come up with something more appealing and unique. Sigh

Why is the dangling sneaker image considered uniquely "Toronto"? Isn't this prevalent in every major American city as well? And why does it symbolize "diversity"? This image already has a myriad of possible associations: crack dealer in vicinity, gang territory, some guy losing his virginity, etc...

Props to him for trying to start up his own business - but sheesh, the execution is WEAK.

(And oh yeah, the concentric circle designs he had were "okay", but I liked the original FAR better:

I'd also recommend checking out Neighborhoodies. I've yet to order one, but they look pretty cool, if not quite cheap.

Urban Outfitters steals designs (not just t-shirts) and is owned by an ultra-rightwing Santorum-supporter.

Meh,
seems like the overdone NY / statue of liberty theme rethought; personally, I get 'Akomplice' T's; Rob Dobi has some pretty nifty styles too: www.robdobi.com
