rapp optical

Posted by Staff / Posted on June 12, 2007

Rapp OpticalRapp Optical has the unique distinction of carrying its own Canadian-made line in its flagship College Street store. It's a combination of Rapp's personal and patriotic philosophy, at prices ranging from $390 to $1200 for the Rapp line.

This shop is fantastic. My husband and I come over from Scotland on holiday every year and this is a must on my shopping list. The staff are brilliant ( Melissa, you are soooo helpful). This is where to go if you want something totally original.

The WORST optical lab I have ever dealt with. The staff is rude, especially Melissa. I have a hearing problem and Melissa rolled her eyes when I asked her to repeat a question. Melvin Rapp is weird and has the worst manners. I said hello politely and he lunged at me, grabbing my hand with both his hands and leered at me like some sex pervert. The place is OVERPRICED! I implore everyone to please compare the prices of frames and lenses to other optical labs unless of course, you want to be taken to the cleaners by Rapp and his tattooed harem of unwashed wenches.

I agree with Sydney. Rude and overpriced. You can get cool glasses all over town not just Rapp.

They are so rude its unbelievable. What's the point of that? I liked some of their frames but went elsewhere - and saved 200 dollars actually - because of the arrogant staff. There are many, many , many great places to shop in TO, no need to go to this self-righteous store.

I can't believe the comments above refer to the same store I know! I have bought frames her for more than a decade. I have always had terrific service, great advice on frames from Mel and Julia, and friendly interactions with the rest of the staff.

Many complaints about Rapp Optical - mostly with the self important service. The owner Mel is patronizing, and cares more about selling you something HE likes that something that looks good. I hear more and more people complaining about Rapp lately, and trust me there are so many great optical stores out there it's just not worth shopping at a place like this.

I cannot believe what I'm reading. Rapp Optical is the last saving grace of exceptional eyewear in Toronto. The staff go above and beyond to get you the right fit.
Where else can you find a product this unique, well-made and tailored in Toronto?
Mel is warm, funny and knowledgeable.

This is a lovely store. It has a great selection and I have always found the staff helpful, courteous, polite, and personable. Just last week Bob helped me select a pair of frames that looked good and fit my budget. Please check it out for yourself and take with a grain of salt what the ranters and ravers above say...

I have complaints about Rapp Optical, and I disagree with these Rapp Disciples. There are lot's of places these days to get great frames and at half the cost of Rapp Optical - complaints that I read here sound similar to my experience. I don't complain very often about customer service, but I found Rapp difficult to deal with.

I've gone to Rapp for more than 20 years.
I bring Jane, my Frames Maven because I'd need my own glasses to see what I look like.
AND EVERY TIME:
The person behind the counter studies my face thoughtfully,
walks around with a little tray selecting a frame from here, then there . . .
and I try those on, and Jane and the salesperson commiserate.
And EVERY TIME one of those 4-5 trial frames is The One.
Results?
CURRENT EXAMPLES ( The stranger always initiated):
1] Santa Barbara Ca. bus driver taking my ticket: "Those are nice glasses, by-the-way!"
2} Woman sitting next to me on a San Francisco bus: "Great glasses, and the green is just right!"

3} Rhinecliff N.Y.: Upscale contractor (wearing nifty frames): "Wow! Cool frames!
I've never seen anything like them and I live in NYC!"

4} Solon, Ohio, I'm in Brooks Bros.: A customer I've never met just walks up to me:
"That hat; the jacket, those glasses! The whole nine yards!"

5} Hip restaurant in Cleveland Heights Ohio: Woman from another table
walks up to me, "Pardon me, but I have to ask, Where did you get those glasses? They are beautiful"
- "Mel Rapp in Toronto."
(She sags, disappointed: "Toronto?!, Well of course they have glasses like that in Toronto." . . .

I'm 70 years old and (for several seconds, anyway) my Rapp glasses are a chick magnet.
Guys too:
6) I'm ready to pay my bill at a Tango Palace cafe on Queen E. "How much?" I ask.
The guy behind the counter says, "Oh, you don't have to pay all year if you give me your glasses!"

Rapp has lovely people in all ways, all these years. And I trust their judgement.

I agree with the positives. I had a problem with my glasses once and Mel Rapp acted like he had personally failed me. Not only was his service perfect, his attitude was amazing. The staff are hip in that irritatingly Toronto way and the prices are skyscraper-high but you really do get what you pay for. I would never go anywhere else.

RUDES. They don't move a dime to make a sale.

From a former employee I have heard that Julia Rapp is extremely rude.
Personally I had no problem because she's good at doing the customer face thing.

I agree with some of the other Rapp Optical complaints - I think it's a snobbery thing. I also think the owners should lighten up. All optical stores spend time helping customers - nothing special here.

I have had nothing but awesome service from Rapp. I go in to get them adjusted, and it is for free... our entire family wear glasses, including our 11 year old daughter (who has been wearing specs since she was 3). they have always been professional, accommodating, and great with our child. The selection is always cutting edge, and inspiring. The staff have gone out of their way to help us, and Mel even came out to play his accordion for our daughter to make her laugh.

Mel is odd, which is why i love him,
if i wanted to have a banker fit my glasses i would go to Hakim Optical.

I think they work hard to fit you with frames. But, I am always worried that they will be over the top and I'll buy something that I'll regret. The weird thing is: They don't give out the name of the glasses and then act all secretive when asking for a photo and this breaks the trust Like are they selling me old crap for full price or what? I like a photo to look at the frames and think about if I can live with the selection before I buy it. I also want to consult my husband to see what he thinks is nice. Too weird for me. I'll shop elsewhere.

Don't even bother going here! Overpriced is an understatement. Rudeness -- why even work there if you feel like it's a hassle to even get up off your butt to help a customer?!? The staff here are amazing at rolling their eyes! As for helping to find frames, well, if you want to try on different frames, prepare to feel guilty about it because the staff are way too busy to get the frames out of the display cases.
What a ridiculous place! How do they stay in business?!? Do the people that shop here regularly like being abused and humiliated? Is it only masochists that shop here? Weird.

I had heard that Rapp could be pricey, so I avoided going. I tried four other places but couldn't find the right frames. Finally I conceded. I received very friendly, expert service from three staff members who helped me at different times. Olivia helped me select perfect frames. I returned to have my old frames turned into sunglasses. Mel kindly offered me extensive details about the frames and spent a great deal of time with me, making sure I was making good choices. Next time I need glasses I will save a few steps and go straight to Rapp.

Don't waste your time at Rapp. Now they're flogging their own mediocre line of frames. Can someone please tell them to do something about the arms on their new line? The same arms on every pair. Come on. Really? Completely lame. Service is with an attitude...every time without fail. Get a life - you're in the service industry. Deal with it. What happened to that place? It used to be THE PLACE TO GET HIP GLASSES!! Stop making your own crappy line and order in some amazing frames. You used to have such a great selection from around the world.

Rapp frames are super amazing, and made in CANADA! HellOOOO, Rapp are the only people out there making amazing frames and they are locally made and they rock. nobody is doing that!! that alone makes them the most amazing optical store in Canada!
so many trolls on here and most likely people from other optical shops pretending to bad mouth Rapp cause they will never come close to the uniqueness, quality, freshness, Knowledge and creativity this store has...sad people out there. shame on you Toronto Trolls.
