About the speaker:

As a registered Traditional South African Healer (Isangoma), Rebecca Rogerson has been exposed to people of all ages, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Trained in Soweto South Africa, she has practiced traditional healing for almost 20 years. As an activist for preservation and survival of indigenous knowledge and traditional healing practices, she has assumed leadership roles at community-based, national and medical levels, as well as in private sectors. Her reputable vocation has led her to various international forums to advocate for traditional healing and medicine, earning her both local and international recognition and legitimacy as a consultant and practitioner. Rebecca is currently working on a graduate degree at York University, teaches at Seneca College and maintains her healing practice in Ontario.

This presentation will explore:

- Traditional South African healing ideologies and practices.

- Why these schemes are important to combating oppression in local and international contexts.

- How we as social activists can better care for ourselves, families and communities.

- What steps can be taken in reclaiming cultural and spiritual spaces as a medium for resistance, empowerment and change.
