The Nutcracker ballet is most popular and watched ballet. On the evening of December 18, 1892, the house of Mariinsky Imperial Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, shined with gold plated interior and the jewelry on the aristocratic audience arriving to watch the long anticipated ballet performance. It was cold outside, and the plot of the action on stage took place during the winter time, before Christmas (since then, the Nutcracker is considered the Christmas ballet). Unlike other ballets, the Nutcracker is a ballet performed in many parts by children. Though its music is very mature. And the history of creation of this ballet is not childish at all. Peter Tchaikovsky worked on its music score during two years on an order of the Theatres Directorate of the Russian Empire. During that time, Tchaikovsky had a tragedy in his life: his sister Alexandra died. He wrote: "Our sunny has gone in dawn". Two years before that, his favorite niece had died. He never had his own children, and loved his nieces and nephews very much. From those events, some tragic melodies in the Nutcracker can be heard.

The first act of the Nutcracker was performed by children, students of ballet schools. The show was so huge that there was shortage of young performers. One of the cadet military schools was located not far from the Mariinsky theatre, and cadet boys were used to create mass battles with mice and rats. The rest of the show was performed by adult dancers.

Do not miss this wonderful event, give some joy to your children and family members.
