THE EVOLUTION OF TORONTO AND ITS FRANCOPHONE COMMUNITY

On Tuesday, December 1, Pierre Filion and the Société d’Histoire de Toronto invite you at the Alliance française for a lecture dedicated to the main stakes regarding town planning which Toronto has to face.

This conference will talk about the problems of transport, housing (in particular its high cost) and social polarization, as well as on the new urban trends such as the densification of the city center and its neighborhood. It will also explore the historic roots of these stakes, paying a particular attention on the role of the politics of town planning, and examining the solutions possible for the urban problems of Toronto by finding lessons resulting from other metropolitan regions. Finally this conference will concern the casting of the French speakers in Toronto, dealing with the reasons explaining the absence of French-speaking district in Toronto.

Pierre Filion is a professor of urban planning at the University of Waterloo. He has published over one hundred articles and chapters. He has served as Vice-President of the Planning and Real Estate Advisory Committee of the National Capital Commission as well as member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Joint Commission and of the Ontario Central Zone Panel, which generated the core proposals that led to the Growth Plan. His research interests include the relation between transportation and urban land use, urban recentralization policies and suburban infrastructures.
