Lauren Satok studied Environmental Studies at Guelph University. With roots in biology and ecology informing her eco-social lens, she pursued studies in the arts: Canadian Art History with Dennis Reid, Contemporary Art History with Lisa Steele; painting with Graham Coughtry; Andy Fabo and Joanne Todd. Her intent is to resist modernization by combining methods in historical Canadian painting while giving valence to local, emotional and contemporary issues.

By disrupting space though strategies of colour and compositional tension, anxieties about ownership and economies can be played out in narratives on the canvas.

Through subverting and blurring the traditional, economically useless land, controversial sites and inappropriate signage suddenly break down creating irreverent and structured chaos.

In dialogue with past and present, Satok contributes to the development of Canadian landscape painting as a genre. Her subjects emerge from her sojourns to Northern Ontario, an ongoing artist residency on Manitoulin Island and from work on organic farms.
