WHAT IS A STARTUP?

According to Wikipedia, a startup is a company designed to search for a repeatable and scalable business model. Startups have limited resources but big ideas and big ambitions. Some even want to change the world. Many of the products you use daily come from companies that were once startups, such as Facebook, Microsoft, Apple and Starbucks.

WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA FOR THE EVENT?

The idea behind Startup Open House is, as hinted by the name, to open up our vibrant start-up communities for other visitors to discover. We are hoping this will help all of us gain more visibility among the general public, and make great connections in the process.

WHERE DID THE INSPIRATION COME FROM?

Many of our friends were showing growing interest for startups and the possibility of working at a startup. So we figured this would be a good way to show them what startups are actually like.

Also, the event draws inspiration from the very successful Portes Ouvertes Design Montreal, where 110 design firms opened up their doors. More than 20,000 human connections were made over 2 days in May 2013. We also discovered later that some YCombinator startups also organized a similar distributed open house event in San Francisco a few years ago too.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AS I VISIT THOSE OFFICES?

Each start-up will welcome you differently. All you should expect is an open door. And great people.

Directly in the offices of startups in your neighborhood and across Canada.

Lide derrire Portes Ouvertes Start-up, comme son nom lindique, est de permettre dautres visiteurs de dcouvrir les vibrantes communauts des start-ups. Nous esprons que cela nous permettra tous de bnficier dune visibilit accrue auprs du public en gnral et dtablir simultanment des contacts intressants.

D'O VIENT L'INSPIRATION?

Plusieurs de nos amis dmontraient un intrt croissant pour les start-ups ou pour la possibilit de travailler pour une start-up. Nous avons donc pens quil sagirait dune bonne faon de leur montrer ce quoi ressemblent rellement les start-ups.

De plus, lvnement sinspire des Portes Ouvertes Design Montral, lors desquelles 110 entreprises de design ont ouvert leurs portes. Plus de 20 000 contacts humains ont t raliss au cours de ce deux journes trs russies en mai 2013. Nous avons galement dcouvert par la suite que quelques start-ups associes YCombinator ont organis San Francisco, il y a quelques annes, des portes ouvertes distribues semblables.
