Somewhere There's 2016 Festival is a testament to the aesthetic diversity, dynamism, and sonic adventurousness of Toronto-based musicians. Its three days encompass everything from frayed songs to all-out abstraction, from soloists to dense large ensembles, and from hushed textural acoustic work to driving direct-into-the-PA-system electronics. There's no shortage of familiar players the various ensembles draw on members of the Caribou Vibration Ensemble, Minotaurs, Canaille, Drumheller, Tasseomancy, the Massey Hall Band, Picastro, Manticore, the Element Choir, Bespoken, Deep Dark United, and many more but the present emphasis tends toward fresh and exploratory configurations.

Somewhere There began life in 2007 as a humble DIY space in Parkdale founded by Scott Thomson, that offered various forms of improvised music on a nightly basis. In more recent years it has grown into a mobile collective, curating events in a number of Toronto's most noted venues for outward-looking workArray Space, Double Double Land, Burdock, Holy Oak, Ratio and, of course, the Tranzac. While they've embraced all corners of Toronto's own vibrant experimental music community, their recent programming has also included some of the brightest lights from the rest of Canada, the U.S. and Europe: Pal Nilsson-Love, Shazad Ismaily, Han Bennink, Wilbert de Joode, Drainolith, Peggy Lee, Diatribes, Hilmar Jensson, and Satoko Fujii.
